Box Score (WARRENSBURG, Mo.) – The 19
th-ranked Central Missouri Mules spotted Arkansas Tech a 10-0 lead through one quarter, but scored 35 unanswered points to grab control and cruise to a 42-16 win on Saturday at Walton Stadium/Kennedy Field.
The Wonder Boys (1-4) took the opening kickoff and marched down the field in six plays to grab a 7-0 lead. Preston Conder hooked up with A.J. Whitmore for a six-yard strike to put ATU in front. After a missed field goal by the Mules, Arkansas Tech drove down and kicked a 22-yard field goal to go in front 10-0. The drive covered 63 yards in 10 plays. ATU had first and goal at the six, but had to settle for a Jorge Vazquez chip shot to go in front by 10. UCM had just 45 yards on 15 first quarter plays and recorded just two first downs.
The Mules used an Arkansas Tech miscue to get things rolling in the second quarter. UCM stalled near mid-field and punted, but on the first play of the ensuing series the Wonder Boys fumbled and
Garrett Smith recovered at the ATU 25. Four plays later
Tommy Corwin snuck it in from one yard out to bring UCM to within 10-7.
The teams traded a pair of three and outs on the next four possessions, but on UCM's second punt
Patrick Lewis forced a fumble and the Mules recovered at the ATU 21 yard line. Seven plays later Corwin hooked up with
Taylor Dyer on a six-yard touchdown to put Central Missouri in front for good at 14-10.
The Mules forced another three and out on the next possession and
Sosaia Taufa came through the middle to block the punt.
Colin Hanna recovered for the Mules at the Arkansas Tech three-yard line. Corwin walked in from a yard out on second and goal and the Mules led 21-10. UCM had a chance to tack on three more points right before the half, but a field goal attempt as time expired missed just wide right.
The Mules took the opening kick of the second half and marched down the field in 12 plays capped by a Corwin to
Jamar Howard seven-yard touchdown to put Central Missouri in front 28-10. Arkansas Tech drove right back down the field taking the ball to the UCM 12. The Mules sniffed out a reverse for an 11-yard loss and then
Brett Ginn picked off Conder at the UCM 10 to hault the drive.
The lead grew to 35-10 when Corwin and Howard hooked up again, this time from 35 yards out on third and eight. The pitch and catch capped a six-play, 56-yard drive. With the made extra point,
Aaron Jamieson became UCM's all-time leader in made extra points with 129.
The Wonder Boys snapped their scoring drought and brought the game to 35-16 when James Landry scrambled around to buy time and hooked up with Trayshun King for 33 yards on fourth and 21. The extra point hit the upright and the lead stood at 35-16.
UCM capped the scoring when Corwin and Howard hooked up for a third time, this one of the four-yard variety to put the Mules on top 42-16.
Corwin finished the day 29-of-49 for 390 yards and four touchdowns and one interception. Howard had 10 catches for 185 yards and three scores, while Dyer hauled in five passes for 69 yards and a touchdown.
Conder was 3-of-17 for 91 yards with one touchdown and one pick, while Landry was 7-of-11 for 90 yards with one score and one interception.
The Mules were led defensively by Lewis' eight tackles and one forced fumble.
Evan Knight and
Calvin Patterson had six stops each and both had one tackle for loss. Ginn had a pair of interceptions and a pass break-up.
The Mules will host Northwest Missouri State next Saturday at 1:30 p.m. on Homecoming.
