Hank McClung
Assistant Coach - Offensive Line | 11th Season

Since year one, Hank McClung has been a part of Coach Svoboda's staff. Now in his 11th year with the Mules, McClung has been a staple as the Mules offensive line coach for a decade. In his career spanning now 33 years, 27 as an offensive line coach, McClung has coached at five different NCAA Division II schools in the Lone Star Conference, and has deep roots in the state of Texas as a native of Midland.

During his time coaching the UCM offensive line, 24 Mules have earned all-conference honors with Logan Freeman and Brian Berzanski earning two first team awards each. Freeman was also an honorable mention All-American following the 2011 season and a second team Academic All-American following the 2012 season. He signed a free agent contract with the Oakland Raiders following his UCM career. Berzanski was an All-Region selection following both his junior and senior seasons.

The 2019 season saw three Mules make the All-MIAA team with center Jake Heckler a First Teamer who also received All-Region and All-American accolades. McClung's line helped the Mules set records for points per game (44.8) and total offense per game (547.5). Central Missouri was first in the MIAA in passing offense and fifth in rushing offense. They scored 31 touchdowns on the ground and averaged 201.3 rushing yards per game. UCM's offensive line blocked for Harlon Hill finalist Brook Bolles who threw for a league-high 4,290 yards and 42 touchdowns.

In 2018, McClung oversaw two All-MIAA performers in First Teamer Derrick Puni and Third Teamer Jake Heckler. Puni went on to claim multiple All-American awards for the 2018 season and signed a contract with the Dallas Cowboys. Puni and Heckler helped the Mules offense lead the MIAA with more than 466 yards of total offense per game. UCM was also second in scoring with 34.7 points per contest.

His Mules enjoyed a terrific season in 2017. The Mules offensive line was responsible for the No. 2 team in total offense in the country. The Mules also set a new team record for rushing touchdowns with 37, led by MIAA Freshman of the Year Devante Turner with 17. Central Missouri rushed for more than 200 yards per game and passed for more than 300 yards per game, averaging 524.4 yards of total offense per game. Following the season, Kane Barker, Chris Gomez and Jake Heckler were all named to the All-MIAA team with Barker earning First Team recognition. Gomez was also a finalist for the Gene Upshaw award as the top lineman in the nation.

In 2016, the UCM offensive line paved the way for the nation’s No. 9 passing offense. The Mules led the conference in passing, were third in scoring and total offense. Derrick Puni earned First Team All-MIAA and Honorable Mention All-America honors. Chris Gomez was a Third Team All-Conference honoree and Layne Fischer earned Honorable Mention honors.

The 2015 Mules’ offensive line led the way for the MIAA’s No. 2 ranked total offense, third-ranked passing and scoring offense and the league’s No. 4 rushing attack. Four Mules were named to the All-Conference team with Berzanski earning First Team honors.

In 2014, his line paved the way for the conference’s leading rusher in All-American LaVance Taylor, who rushed for a UCM single-season record 1,918 yards and his 218.2 all-purpose yards per game was the top mark in all of NCAA Division II.

McClung was named the AFCA Division II Assistant Coach of the Year following the 2011 season. His offensive lines allowed just 16 sacks in each of the 2010 and 2011 seasons, while blocking for two of the top passers in Central Missouri history. The Mules attempted nearly 1,200 passes during that span, while becoming the first team in NCAA-II history with a 5,000-yard passer and a 1,000-yard rusher in the same season (2010).

In 2009, he was at the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee but spent the previous six seasons as the offensive line coach at Angelo State University in San Angelo, Texas. While there he coached an offensive unit that broke the school record with more than 5,000 yards in a season, and 742 yards in a game, as well as two 1,000-yard rushers. One of his running backs also broke the school record with 8.9 yards per carry in a season. He also helped the Rams to a Division II Playoff appearance in 2005.

Prior to his time at ASU, McClung was at Division I-AA Drake University (Iowa) from 2000-2002, where he also coached the offensive line. While at Drake, he helped lead the Bulldogs to the 2000 Pioneer Football League Championship, with his offensive line being named the team’s offensive MVP for its performance in 2002.

He made a one-year stop at Abilene Christian University (Texas) in 1999 after a three-year stint as head coach at Midwestern State University (Texas) from 1996-98. While there he directed the program’s move from the NAIA to NCAA Division II. He was the interim head coach there in 1995, and the offensive coordinator and offensive line coach in 1994 and 1995. During his time as the offensive coordinator, he also served as assistant head coach, and helped the team break every passing record in the books.

McClung also spent three seasons at Texas Tech, a season at Southeastern Oklahoma State University, and a season at Eastern New Mexico University, his alma mater. He also coached under Mules head coach Jim Svoboda at Nebraska Wesleyan in 1988-89.

McClung received his bachelor’s degree in physical education from ENMU in 1986 where he also played football, and his master’s degree in sports and recreation management from Hardin-Simmons University in 2000.

He and his wife, Rhonda, have two children, Ben and Isabelle.
