Assistant/Pitching Coach | 3rd Season
Former UCM pitcher Ethan Westphal enters his third season as the pitching coach for Central Missouri.
Last season, in his second season in the dugout, Westphal helped Central Missouri to yet another MIAA regular season and tournament championship and a 46-9 overall record.
Westphal coached 2022 NCBWA Honorable Mention All-American starting pitcher Collin Jones as well as D2CCA Second Team All-Central Region closer Brady Gavin. He also instructed Honorable Mention All-MIAA reliever Harrison Babbitt. Central Missouri led the MIAA in pitching, posting a 4.12 team ERA in 460 2/3 innings with 11 saves, 445 strikeouts and only 202 walks.
In his first season back in the Red and Black in 2021, Westphal helped guide the Mules to MIAA regular season and tournament championships, in addition to the NCAA-II Central Region crown and a runner-up showing at the NCAA Division II College World Series with a 46-8 overall record.
Central Missouri led the MIAA in pitching, posting a team ERA of 3.63 with only 190 earned runs allowed on 412 hits in 470 2/3 innings pitched. UCM’s 3.63 team ERA ranked eighth in all of NCAA Division II baseball in 2021 and its strikeout-to-walk ratio of 3.54 was tops in the conference and fifth in Division II.
Westphal coached first team All-MIAA pitchers Mason Green and Evan Rathburn, in addition to second team all-conference arm and 2021 CoSIDA Academic All-American first team selection Chase Plymell, as well as All-MIAA third team honoree Collin Jones. Green was also D2CCA First Team All-American and All-Region selection.
Westphal was on the Mules pitching staff in 2016, helping UCM to an NCAA Division II World Series appearance. In his one season at UCM, Westphal started 14 games going 11-2 with a 2.60 ERA and 103 strikeouts. He threw two complete-game shutouts and was named to the MIAA First Team and an All-Region pitcher.
Following his time at UCM, Westphal pitched professionally for three seasons, two in the Colorado Rockies organization and one year for the Lake Erie Crushers in the Frontier League.
After his playing days were finished, Westphal joined the staff at Simpson college for the 2019 season.
