WALTHAM, Mass. – The receiving votes Central Missouri Jennies (1-2, 0-0 MIAA) dropped a pair of matches, beginning with a 3-0 (21-25, 11-25, 21-25) defeat to No. 18 Lynn Fighting Knights (1-0, 0-0 SSC), before losing by a final score of 3-2 (25-13, 23-25, 25-20, 19-25, 12-15) to No. 22 Bentley Falcons (1-1, 0-0 NE10) Friday, August 28, on day two of the Sandy Hoffman Memorial Tournament, inside the Dana Center, on the campus of Bentley University, in Waltham, Mass.
The Jens conclude play at the Sandy Hoffman Memorial Tournament Saturday, August 29, as they take on (Receiving Votes) Grand Valley State Lakers (2-0, 0-0 GLIAC) at 10:30 a.m. (CST).
Match 1: No. 18 Lynn 3, RV Central Missouri 0 (21-25, 11-25, 21-25)
After claiming victory in the opening two sets of the match, the Fighting Knights completed the sweep in the third highlighted by a 3-0 run with the score tied at 16.
Three Jens recorded five kills in the match, pacing Central Missouri offensively, including
Kaelyn McDonald (match-high five blocks),
Bria Dawson, and
Shaye Koski.
Libero
Ragin Corwin collected a match-best 12 digs, leading the Jens defensively in the back row, while setter
Chloe Rauner had 13 assists and seven digs.
Junior
Grace Wagers had three kills, two blocks, and two digs, while Blue Springs, Mo. native
Maya Fergerson had three kills in the match.
Match 2: No. 22 Bentley 3, RV Central Missouri 2 (25-13, 23-25, 25-20, 19-25, 12-15)
In the doubleheader finale, both teams split the first two sets before Central Missouri head coach
Caitlin Peterson called a timeout, leading 14-13 in the third.
The Jens responded with a 6-1 run, beginning with a kill from sophomore
Sammy Klotz (career-high eight kills) en route to a 25-20 victory, taking a 2-1 lead in the match.
After the Falcons forced a fifth set in the match with a 25-20 victory in the fourth, Central Missouri opened the frame on a 4-1 run, bookended by kills from Koski (12 kills and four digs overall).
With the score tied at 12, Bentley closed out the match with a 3-0 run, earning their first victory of the season, led by Sophia Poehlein's match-high 20 kills.
Dawson, a native of Overland Park, Kan., posted a career-high 17 kills on 37 swings, good enough for a .378 hitting percentage, adding a career-best six total blocks, including a career-high two solo stuffs for good measure.
Three Jens recorded career-highs with three service aces, including
Nora Wiley (eight digs),
Kirsten Harper (five digs), and Corwin (career-best 23 digs), while Rauner posted her first career double-double with a match-high 44 assists and 12 digs.
Freshman
Evynn Olsen collected 14 digs, plus middle blocker
Grace Wagers added four kills in the match.
