Wright and Forsyth Claim Regional Titles as No. 13 Mules Qualify Six for Nationals

EDMOND, Okla. – No. 13 University of Central Missouri Mules Wrestling finished in second place and had six wrestlers qualify for the NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships at the NCAA-II Super Region IV Championships on Sunday, March 1, inside Hamilton Field House.

No. 11 James Wright (141) and Torin Forsyth (285) won the regional championships in their respective weight classes.

No. 14 Drew Stanfield, No. 7 Gage Bernall, Anthony Erickson, and No. 1 Damon Ashworth placed in the top three of their weight classes to qualify for the NCAA Championships. The six qualifiers are the most for UCM Wrestling since 2009. 

No. 2 Central Oklahoma captured the NCAA-II Super Region IV Championship with 156 total team points, while the Mules were runner-up with 132 team points. No. 10 McKendree rounded out the top three in third with 112 points.

Karim Allal had a bye in the first round. In the quarterfinal, Allal dropped his bout to Bryson Humphries of Drury in an 8-5 sudden victory decision. In his second round of the competition, Allal beat Justin Shaw of Ouachita Baptist by a technical fall. He went on to defeat Jaxson Newcomb of Newman to win with another technical fall and won the semifinal over Maryville's decision 12-8 to move on to third place. Allal took fourth after losing to Drury's Humphries with an 8-2 decision. Allal scored 11.5 team points for the Mules.

Stanfield received a bye for the first round and went head-to-head with Indianapolis' Aiden Sprague. Stanfield won with a tech fall to move on to the semifinal. He dropped his match to Jason Henschel of MIAA foe Central Oklahoma by major decision (8-0). The redshirt junior rallied in the consolation bouts by defeating Newman's Jevin Foust by a 7-6 decision. He scored 13 team points.

Wright scored 15 points for the Mules. He started off in the quarterfinals, where he secured a 5-0 decision over Maryville's Caleb Carter. In the semifinals, he edged out McKendree's Ronan Schuelke 5-4. Wright clinched the regional title with a 4-2 decision over Josh Taylor of Central Oklahoma.

Trey Dillow placed fifth and contributed 10 team points. After a quarterfinal win over Caleb Andrews, Dillow fell in the semifinals and consolation semifinals. He secured fifth place via a medical forfeit over Mason Knight of Drury.

Ayden Dolt finished fifth, scoring 12.5 team points. Dolt battled through the consolation bracket with a 60-second pin over Dalen Kimble and a 15-0 technical fall over Eli Means. He capped his performance with another first-period fall (1:20) against Isaiah Nichols in the fifth place match.

Bernall placed third and scored 15.5 team points. After a narrow 3-2 loss in the semifinals, Bernall dominated his remaining matches, securing a major decision in the consolation semi and a 19-3 technical fall over Thomas More's Kailan Keith to claim third.

Anthony Erickson earned third place and 12.5 team points. Erickson bounced back from a semifinal loss to Hunter Jump by defeating Jeremiah Halter 5-1 and then topping McKendree's Zeke Waltz 3-1 in the third-place bout.

Ashworth placed second, adding 17 team points. Ashworth displayed immense power early on, recording two pins in under a minute (0:28 and 0:42) to reach the finals, where he eventually fell to McKendree's Darion Johnson.

Trey Brewer finished sixth with nine team points. Brewer fought back in the consolation rounds with two falls over Judah Yates and Owen Gardner, but was unable to wrestle in the fifth-place match.

Forsyth took first place, scoring 16 team points. He navigated a tight 3-2 tie-breaker win in the semifinals against Jonovan Smith before defeating Cale Gray of Indianapolis, 4-1, to secure the heavyweight crown.

The wrestlers who qualified for the NCAA-II Championships will compete March 13-14 at the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center in Sioux Falls, S.D.
