SHAWNEE, Kan. – The Central Missouri Jennies (8-6, 0-0 MIAA) defeated the Maryville Saints (8-13, 0-0 GLVC) by a final score of 9-0 (5 inn.) and the Minnesota State Mavericks (6-8, 0-0 NSIC) 6-5 (8 inn.) on Sunday, March 2, in the final day of the Top Gun College Classic from the MidAmerica Sports Complex in Shawnee, Kan.
The Jens return to the diamond on Friday, March 7, as they begin MIAA play on the road against the Fort Hays State Tigers (8-4, 0-0 MIAA) for a doubleheader with game one's first pitch slated for 1:00 p.m. from Fleharty Family Field in Hays, Kan.
Game 1: Central Missouri 9, Maryville 0 (5 inn.)
The Jens scored six runs in their opening frame of the ballgame ending with a
Brooke Weimer RBI double (scoring
Morgan Shields) before adding three more insurance runs in the second. Weimer (2-4) earned the victory in the circle allowing just two hits while striking out a career-high 11 Saints batters for her team-best fifth complete game of the season.
Seven Central Missouri batters recorded hits in the game highlighted by a 2-for-2 performance from
Marisa Johnson who scored twice in the winning effort.
Game 2: Central Missouri 6, Minnesota State 5 (8 inn.)
In the Top Gun College Classic finale, UCM opened the scoring in the bottom of the second with a sacrifice fly off the bat of
Emma McCall (scoring
Bailey Brumley) before a bases-loaded RBI walk from
Jadyn Sheffield (scoring
Aly Hageman) made it 2-0. The next Jens batter was
Taylor Thompson who singled to center field scoring
Lexi Blackmon and
Andi Siebeneck making it a four-run advantage.
The Mavericks responded by scoring a pair of runs in the sixth and seventh before taking the lead in the eighth. With the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the eighth, the Jens tied the game thanks to a wild pitch before a walk-off McCall RBI single to left field gave Central Missouri their eighth win of the season.
Weimer (3-4) picked up her second win of the day tossing three innings in relief of
Emily Brouse (six strikeouts) while Thompson paced the Jens offensively going 2-for-4 as Johnson, Hageman, and McCall each recorded hits for good measure.
