Jennies Volleyball Sweeps Missouri Southern in Joplin

JOPLIN, Mo. – The (Receiving Votes) Central Missouri Jennies (15-5, 7-3 MIAA) swept the Missouri Southern Lions (8-14, 2-8 MIAA) by a final score of 3-0 (25-23, 25-19, 25-23) Friday, Oct. 24, inside Robert Ellis Young Gymnasium in Joplin.     
 
Central Missouri began the match on a 6-1 run, highlighted by a pair of kills from Rachel Ziesman (eight kills and four blocks overall), before the fifth kill of the set from the senior gave the Jens a 25-23 victory.
 
UCM doubled its advantage with a pair of 5-1 runs, winning 25-19, led by setter Kayla Baer's (match-high 34 assists, six digs, two kills, and two blocks overall) 12 assists, as the Jens were 13-of-19 (68 percent) on sideout opportunities for good measure.
 
Trailing 2-1 in the third, redshirt junior Kaelyn McDonald (team-best 11 kills and two digs) evened the frame with one of her match-high three service aces, followed by an attack error on the Lions, gave the Jens the lead for good as they picked up their ninth sweep of the season with a 25-23 victory.
 
Junior Maya Fergerson had nine kills, three digs, and two blocks overall, while Parkville, Mo. native Shaye Koski added seven kills and three digs in the winning effort.
 
Defensively, Central Missouri was paced in the back row by redshirt senior Grace Winkelmann, who collected a match-high 19 digs, plus, defensive specialist Kirsten Harper had nine digs, freshman Ragin Corwin had eight digs, and Aurora, Colo. native Brenna Kelly added seven digs.
 
Central Missouri continues MIAA play Friday, Oct. 31, as they host No. 7 Central Oklahoma Bronchos (20-3, 6-3 MIAA), for Halloween Trick or Treat Night, beginning at 6:00 p.m. from Dr. Peggy Martin Court, inside the Jerry M. Hughes Athletics Center in Warrensburg.
