DES MOINES, Iowa. -- The No. 24-ranked University of Central Missouri Mules wrestling team competed in the Grand View Open Saturday, Nov. 16. They were led by No. 4
Damon Ashworth,
Xerarch Tungjaroenkul,
Peyton Shepard, and
Charlie Dykes, who all placed in their respective weight classes.
Ashworth, a redshirt junior from Excelsior Springs, Mo. who is ranked fourth in the NWCA Preseason Individual Rankings, took third at 184 pounds. He dropped his first match against Iowa State (Dec 12-4), but continued to win his next seven matches, five by fall and two by decision to finish third.
Tungjaroenkul, a freshman from Emporia, Kan., also took third place in the freshman/sophomore division at 157 pounds. He won his first three matches by fall and two more by decision before losing to Davion King of Labette County Community College. Once in the consolation bracket, Tungjaroenkul had a medical forfeit win to claim third.
Dykes, a freshman from Lee's Summit, Mo., took first place at 125 pounds in the freshman/sophomore division. He won his first two matches by technical fall, two more by major decision, and one by decision. In the final match he won by decision over Dru Ayala (Iowa), 9-6.
Shepard, a redshirt freshman from St. Charles, Mo., took fourth place at 125 pounds in the freshman/sophomore division. He dropped his first match against Trevon Oehme, 3-0, but continued to win his next eight matches, three by fall, two by medical forfeit, one by decision, and one by a major decision to finish fourth.
The Mules will return to competition on Sunday, Nov. 24, at the UCM Kaufman Brand Bayly Open in Warrensburg inside the Jerry M. Hughes Athletics Center.
