Jennies, Washburn Split First Two in Best-of-Three Series

WARRENSBURG, Mo. (May 7, 2021) - After Central Missouri took game one with a 7-0 shutout victory in the best-of-three series against Washburn, the Ichabods walked away from game two with the 3-1 victory to force a third game in the opening round of the 2021 MIAA Tournament. 

GAME 1 - Central Missouri 7, Washburn 0 
How it Happened:
• The Jennies recorded their seventh shutout victory of the season with a 7-0 win over Washburn in game one of the best-of-three series against Washburn. 
• First-Team All-MIAA pitcher Paige Petefish tossed the completed shutout. Petefish and the Jennies defense held the Ichabods with just four hits in 24 at-bats. 
• There was little to no action in the first four innings as just three runners reached on base with two UCM hits and one Washburn hit. 
• Central Missouri stole the show in the bottom of the fifth inning scoring five runs off five hits. 
• Third baseman Jessica Sader opened the inning with a single through the left side. Jennies catcher Taylor Nickel laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance pinch runner Peyton Corrigan.
• Two pinch hitters stepped up to the challenge as Abby Allnut singled up the middle on her first pitch, scoring Corrigan for the first run of the game. Allnut's hit was followed with a walk by pinch hitter Aubrey Brown to give the Jennies two baserunners with just one out. Shortstop Abbey Fischer then singled to left field, loading the bases. 
• The Jennies second run of the game was gifted from Washburn's pitcher Raegen Hamm as she walked Bailey Fowler to increase UCM's lead by two. Washburn's Allie Thissen came into relieve Hamm in the circle with bases loaded  and just one out. 
• Keeping the fifth inning alive, right fielder Ashlyn Cook singled to left center scoring Fischer and Fowler. Another single up the middle from the designated played Sydney Wellshear scored McAtee for the Jennies final run of the inning at a 5-0 lead. 
• While the Ichabods offense stayed silent, the Jennies added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth off two hits and one Washburn error.
• With two outs and runners on first and second, Fowler doubled to right center, scoring both Fischer and McRoberts as UCM increased its lead to 7-0.
• Washburn was able to generate two its in the top of the seventh. Petefish and the Jennies defense held all runners on to end the game. 
• Central Missouri out-hit Washburn 9-4. 
• The Jennies seven-run performance is the most runs scored by UCM since April 22nd against Missouri Western. 

Leading the Jennies: 
Bailey Fowler led the UCM offense with two doubles and three RBI.
Jessica Sader also shared Fowler's game-high two hits in three at-bats.
Abbey Fischer scored a game-high two runs. 
Paige Petefish threw her third shutout of the season with the 7-0 victory. In 24 at-bat she held the Ichabods with just four hits with no walks and two strikeouts. 

For the Ichabods:
• Marritt Mead finished 1-3 with a double.
• Raegen Hamm tossed the first 4.1 innings allowing five runs on five hits with two walks and two strikeouts.
• Ashlie Thissen came in to throw 1.2 inning of relief allowing two unearned runs on four hits.

GAME 2 - Washburn 3, Central Missouri 1
How it Happened:
• Central Missouri had opportunities, leaving nine runners on base. They outhit Washburn 8-5. Of the 13 combined hits, 12 were singles.
• Although each team made just one error, defense played a pivotal role as both teams allowed an unearned run.   
• Both teams put the ball in play. Washburn struckout just four times while the Jennies fanned just three.
• Game two started out similarly to game one. Neither team got a hit until the second inning when Sydney Wellshear laced a one-out single but was left stranded at first.
• Washburn broke through with a run in the third. Brianna Fuchs led off the inning with a walk, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a Paige Robbins to left.
• The score remained that way until the sixth. The Jennies though got the tying run on base in the third and fourth and the go-ahead run on in the fifth, but Washburn worked out of each jam to keep the Jens off the board. With two on in the fifth, Paige Robbins made a diving catch running in towards the plate to end the inning and keep the Washburn lead.
• UCM scored on a wild play in the sixth to tie the game. Ashlyn Cook laced a one-out double to left center and advanced to third on Wellshear's single. After Jessica Sader fouled out, Ashlyn Cook stole a run. The throw from the catcher back to the pitcher got away and Cook raced for home, making it just underneath the tag with the tying run.
• Washburn responded by plating a pair in the top of the seventh. The Jennies got the first two out, but three straight singles and a fielding error brought in two runs for a 3-1 Washburn lead.
• Central Missouri again had a chance in the bottom of the seventh, but couldn't come through. Aubrey Brown led off with a pinch-hit single. After back-to-back strikeouts, Bailey Fowler kept the inning alive with a single that fell just in front of a diving outfielder in right. Makenzie McAtee drew a seven-pitch walk to load the bases for Ashlyn Cook. Cook hit a rope to the opposite field, but right at the right fielder who squeezed it to end the game.

Jennies Stat Leaders:
Sadie Parks got the start and went the first 6.2 innings allowing three runs, two earned on five hits with a walk and four strikeouts.
Sydney Wellshear finished 2-3.
Ashlyn Cook went 1-4 with a run scored and a stolen base.
Aubrie McRoberts and Brenlyn McCoy each went 1-2.

For the Ichabods:
• Jaycee Ginter went the distance on the mound allowing an unearned run on eight hits with two walks and three strikeouts.
• Paige Robbins drove in a pair going 1-3. She also made a diving catch to end the fifth.
• Brianna Fuchs was 1-2 with a walk and scored twice.
• Kimi Patterson was 1-3 with a run scored.

News and Notes:
• Sydnsey Wellsher and Bailey Fowler led the Jennies offense on the day with three hits each. 
Paige Petefish is now 14-3 on the season. She is now just one strikeout away from her 100th of the season. 
• The Jennies allowed just a combined nine hits in the two games and walked just one.
• Jennies pinch hitters went 2-5 with a walk and an RBI.
• The Jennies shutout in game one was just the fourth time Washburn has been shutout this season.  
• Central Missouri continues to lead the all-time series against the Ichabods 51-46. 
• Tomorrow's game will be the fifth straight between the Jennies and Washburn.

• The Jennies will battle Washburn again to keep their season alive. Game three of the MIAA Tournament Round One Best-of-Three Series begins tomorrow at 2 p.m.
