Jennies Hold Hornets To One Run in League Sweep

EMPORIA, Kan. (April 9, 2021) - Central Missouri Softball picked up its second consecutive MIAA sweep with two wins over Emporia State on the road. Kyleigh Lay and the Jennies defense claimed the 3-0 shutout in game one while Paige Petefish threw the Jennies 4-1 victory in game two. 

GAME 1 - Central Missouri 3, Emporia State 0
How it Happened:
• The Jennies scored three runs in three separate innings in their 3-0 shutout over Emporia State. 
• The first three innings went scoreless. Central Missouri recorded three hits and left three running on base through three innings while the Hornets went without a hit.
• A singly through the left side by second baseman Brenlyn McCoy scored right fielder Ashlyn Cook for the first run of the game as the Jennies took a 1-0 lead. 
• The Jennies added another in the next inning as center fielder Bailey Fowler singled through the right side, scoring left fielder Aubrie McRoberts
• Central Missouri scored its third and final run of the game in the top of the seventh. Fowler, the MIAA leader in doubles, doubled to left field scoring shortstop Abbey Fischer
Kyleigh Lay and the UCM defense allowed just two hits through seven innings.
• The Jennies out hit the Hornets 11-2. 

Leading the Jennies:
Bailey Fowler, Sydney Wellshear, and Brenlyn McCoy led UCM with two hits each. 
• Fowler and McCoy drove in the Jennies two earned runs.
Kyleigh Lay threw the complete game for the Jennies. In 23 at-bats she allowed just two hits, no runs, and one walk while striking out eight batters.

Leading the Hornets:
• Gabby Biondo and Brittanie Sheperd led ESU with one hit apeice. 
• Kelsey Philiphs also threw a complete game. In 29 at-bat she allowed 11 hits, three runs, and one walk while striking out two. 

GAME 2 - Central Missouri 4, Emporia State 1 
How it Happened:
• The Hornets were the first to score in game two as they plated one run off one hit and one UCM error in the bottom of the first. The run would be the only ESU score of the day. 
• The Jennies quickly responded with a run of their own in the top of the second as Carson Staponski singled through the left side scoring pinch runner Peyton Corrigan
• Central Missouri too the 2-1 lead in the top of the third. First basemen Makenzie McAtee singled through the right side to score Abbey Fischer, unearned. 
• The Jennies added another in their next at-bats in the top of the fourth as Jessica Sader hit a solo bomb to left field, increased the Jennies lead to 3-1. 
• As Paige Petefish and the UCM defense continued to hold the Hornets offense, the Jennies scored the fourth and final run of the day in the top of the sixth. Another Staponski single scored Ashlyn Cook from third. 
• Central Missouri out hit the Hornets 10-1 in game two. 
• Petefish and the Jennies defense allowed just two runners on base through the entire seven innings.

Leading the Jennies:
• Jennies catcher Carson Staponski lead UCM with a 3-3 perforamce in the box. She also led the Jennies with two RBI. 
• Makenize McAtee went 2-4 with an RBI. 
Jessica Sader was 2-2 with an RBI. 

Leading the Hornets:
• Second baseman Gabby Biondo recorded the Hornets only hit and run scored. 
• Designated Player Kerrigan Dixon drove in ESU's lone run. 
• Dixon also threw a team-high six innings. In 26 at-bats she allowed nine hits, four hits, and stuck out one. 

News & Notes:
• On the day, UCM recored 21 hits, six RBI, and scored seven runs while the pitching staff and the defense allowed just three hits and one run scored. 
• Sophomore right fielder Ashlyn Cook recorded her 100th career start in game two against the Hornets.
• With two wins today, UCM decreased the Hornets lead in the all-time series 61-42.  
• Both the Jennies and the Hornets raised awareness for Amniotic Fluid Embolism during today's games.
