WICHITA, Kan. (March 26, 2021) - Central Missouri Softball earned its second MIAA sweep of the season with two wins against Newman on the road. In game one the Jennies shutout the Jets 8-0 in five innings and earned the sweep with a 6-3 victory in game two. Four Jennies hit above .500 on the day.
GAME 1 - Central Missouri 8, Newman 0 (5 innings)
How It Happened:
• Central Missouri scored runs in the first, fourth, and fifth innings to defeat the Jets with an 8-0 mercy rule after five complete innings.
• Leadoff hitting
Abbey Fischer singled up the middle in UCM's first at-bat of the day. Fischer was hit home by first baseman
Makenzie McAtee with another Jennies single up the middle.
• During McAtee's attempt to steal second, center fielder
Bailey Fowler scored from third to give UCM an early 2-0 after the top of the first.
• Central Missouri added two more in the top of the fourth as
Sydney Wellshear opened the inning with a solo bomb to left center. A double to center field by
Aubrie McRoberts would score third baseman
Jessica Sader for the Jennies second run of the inning.
• With a 4-0 lead, the Jennies added four more runs in the top of the fifth. Both Fowler and McAtee walked to begin the inning. A single through the left side by
Ashlyn Cook scored Fowler, then a double to left center by Wellshear scored McAtee and Cook.
• Wellshear scored the Jennies eighth and final run of the game on a ground out to the shortstop by UCM's catcher
Carson Staponski.
• Freshman
Kyleigh Lay and the UCM defense held the Jets with no hits through four innings. Newman recorded its first hit of the game in its second at-bat in the bottom of the fifth on a single to right field.
• The Jennies out-hit the Jets 10-1 and only left three runners on base.
• Four of the UCM's 10 hits were for extra bases as Wellshear and McRoberts each hit a double, Fowler recorded a triple and Wellshear had a home run.
Leading the Jennies:
• Cook, McRoberts and Wellshear lead the Jennies offense with two hits each.
• Central Missouri's designated player Wellshear drove in a game-high three runs.
• Wellshear and Fowler shared the team-high runs scored with two apiece.
• In 17 at-bats, Lay threw a career-high 10 strikeouts with zero walks and allowed just one hit against the Jets.
Leading the Jets:
• Left fielder Kaitlyn Praught recorded Newman's only hit.
• Madison Dewitt pitched the entire five innings against the Jennies. In 22 at-bats she allowed 10 hits, eight runs and four walks.
GAME 2 - Central Missouri 6, Newman 3
How It Happened:
• Newman was the first to score in game two. With one out and bases loaded, a sacrifice fly to left field would score the Jets first run of the day. Newman added another run on a UCM error committed when attempting to throw a stealing base runner out at second.
• The Jennies quickly responded to the 2-0 deficit with a three run inning in the top of the third. In UCM's first at bat of the inning,
Abbey Fischer homered to deep center for the Jennies second dinger of the day.
• Center fielder
Bailey Fowler restarted the offense after Fischer's home run with a double to center. With one out and Fowler on second, right fielder
Ashlyn Cook sailed her second pitch over the fence in right center, scoring Fowler and herself to give the Jennies the 3-2 advantage.
• The Jets tied things up in the bottom of the fourth scoring another run off a sacrifice fly to the outfield.
• Central Missouri regained its lead in the top of the fifth as
Sydney Wellshear hit a three-run bomb to left field scoring Cook, pinch runner
Peyton Corrigan, and herself. Jennies led 6-3 moving into the bottom of the fifth.
• The following innings went scoreless with each teaming only recording one hit.
Sadie Parks and the Jennies defense recorded three outs with one runner left on base in the Jets final at-bats to complete the game with the 6-3 victory.
• Eight different Jennies accounted for UCM's 11 total hits. Central Missouri out-hit Newman 11-3.
• Among UCM's 11 hits, six of them were for extra bases as the Jennies finished with three doubles and three home runs.
Leading the Jennies:
• Fischer, McAtee and
Brenlyn McCoy led the Jennies with two hits each.
• Wellshear drove in a game-high three runs.
• Cook led the Jennies in runs scored with two.
• Freshmen Parks threw a game-high three innings against the Jets. In 11 at-bats she just one hit and one walk while striking out three Newman batters.
Leading the Jets:
• Three different Jets recorded one hit.
• First baseman Kaitlyn Praught scored the team-high two runs.
• Lauren Kwak and Elisabeth McGill led the Jets with one RBI apiece.
• Anna Veltien threw the complete game for Newman. In 29 at bats she allowed 11 hits, six runs and two walks.
News & Notes:
• In their 2-0 sweep the Jennies totaled 21 hits, 14 runs, 13 RBI, left seven runners on base and recorded two errors.
• Four Jennies hit over .500 on the day, led by freshman
Aubrie McRoberts with a .750 batting average in four at bats.
• Central Missouri's 8-0 win in game one was the Jennies fourth shutout of the season.

Sarah Brown made her first appearance in the circle of the season during game two against the Jets. In two innings she faced seven batters, giving up one hit and one run while also recording her first strikeout of the season.
• The Jennies have hit at least one home run in the last 10 consecutive games.
• In the circle for the Jennies, Kyleigh lay is now 2-1 on the year while Said Parks advanced to 5-1.
• Central Missouri now leads the all-time series against Newman 3-0.

Jennies Softball (15-3, 4-0 MIAA) travels to Edmond, Okla. tomorrow, Saturday, March 27th to take on No. 25 Central Oklahoma in another MIAA doubleheader. Game one is schedule to begin at 12 p.m. on Bronchos Field.
