TOPEKA, Kan. (Feb. 28, 2021) - Central Missouri Softball suffered its first losses of the season on the final day of the Washburn Invitational. The Jennies closed out the opening weekend with a record of 4-2.
Game 1 - Central Missouri 1, Mary 4
How it Happened:
• Central Missouri had its slowest offensive start of the young season against Mary as the Jennies went without a hit for the first four innings.
• The Marauders wasted no time gaining an early advantage over UCM. With two outs and two runners on, Mary's second baseman doubled to right center, scoring both runners.
• Brenlyn McCoy recorded UCM's first hit with a single to left field in the bottom of the fifth with two outs. The Marauders recorded their third out with the senior second baseman still on first.
• Mary added another run in the top of the sixth with one hit and one Jennies error to lead 3-0.
• Sydney Wellshear recorded UCM's second hit with a single down the right field foul line with two outs. She was also left on first.
• With three hits in the top of the seventh, the Marauders added what would be their final run against the Jennies. Kyleigh Lay came in to pitch for the Jennies with two runners on and no outs. Lay earned all three outs with strikeouts but gave up a single down the right field line in the process, increasing the Marauders lead to 4-0.
• Central Missouri's rally attempt in the bottom of the seventh fell short. With one out, freshmen Aubrie McRoberts singled to left field and advanced to third on a fielding error. McRoberts was hit home by fellow freshman Abby Allnutt with a double to center.
• The Mary defense recorded its final two outs on a Jennies popup and ground-out to third to defeat UCM 4-1.
• Four different Jennies accounted for UCM's total hits.
• The Marauders out-hit the Jennies 8-4.
Leading the Jennies:
• Wellshear, McRoberts, Allnutt and McCoy finished with one hit each.
• Allnutt drove in the Jennies solo run, scored by McRoberts.
• Freshmen Sadie Parks threw six innings. She allowed seven Mary hits, gave up three earned runs and stuck out six.
• Lay came in for the final inning. She allowed one hit and calmed all three outs with strikeouts.
For the Marauders:
• Left fielder Brooke De Jong led Mary with three hits in four at bats. She also scored the team-high two runs.
• Second baseman Kaylee Kannegiesser led Mary with two RBI.
• Alissa Alvarado threw the entire game, totaling seven UCM strikeouts while giving up just four hits and one run.
Game 2 - Central Missouri 1, Sioux Falls 3
How it Happened:
• Both the Jennies and Cougars went three up, three down on their first attempts at the plate.
• Central Missouri recorded the game's first hit as Sydney Wellshear singled up the middle in the top of the second.
• The Cougars scored all three of their runs in the bottom of the third with four hits. There were two Cougars left on base when UCM recorded its third out.
• Third baseman Jessica Sader opened the top of the fifth with a double down the left line. Central Missouri lost two outs to a double play as Makenzie McAtee flew out to left field and pinch runner Peyton Corrigan was thrown out at third on in the process.
• With two outs and bases cleared, second basement Brenlyn McCoy singled up the middle to keep the inning alive.
• McCoy found her way home on a triple by shortstop Abbey Fischer, putting UCM on the board at 3-1.
• The Jennies went 0-3 in the top of the sixth but had a shot in their final at bat with three Jennies recording hits.
• Abby Allnutt doubled down the left field line but was thrown out on a rundown. Sader and McAtee's back-to-back singles were followed by a Sioux Falls ground double-play with a line out to the pitcher who tossed it to firstbase for the final out. The Cougars win 3-1.
• Central Missouri doubled its runs from the first game of the day. They finished with eight total, out-hitting Sioux Falls by two.
• Both the Jennies and Cougars left five runners on base.
Leading the Jennies:
• Sader went 2-3 to lead the UCM offense.
• Six Jennies finished with one hit each.
• Paige Petefish threw her second full game of the season. She finished with six strikeouts while giving up six hits, three runs and two walks.
Leading the Cougars:
• Center fielder Frankie Mickleson led USF with two hits on three at bats.
• Kaitlyn VanDerZwaag led the offense with two RBI.
• VanDerZwaag also led the Cougars in the circle, throwing the entire game with three strikeouts while giving up eight UCM hits, one run and one walk.
News & Notes:
• Mary's win over the Jennies was its first on the season. They are now 1-6.
• Central Missouri's four hits against Mary is a season-low for the Jennies
• Jessica Sader's hits against Sioux Falls were the third basemen's first of the season.
• Through six games, short stop Abbey Fischer continues to lead the Jennies offense with a .412 batting average.
• Mary now leads the all-time series against UCM 2-1.
• Sioux Falls claimed it's first ever victory over the Jennies. Central Missouri continues to lead the all-time series 5-1.
