WARRENSBURG, Mo. –- Ashleigh Martin netted a goal in the 92nd-minute of overtime to give the top-seeded and No. 11-ranked University of Central Missouri Jennies soccer team a 3-2 win over Fort Hays State in the MIAA Women's Soccer Championship quarterfinals Sunday, Nov. 7, at the South Recreation Complex.
The Jennies (16-2-1) advance to the MIAA tournament semifinals and will host No. 4 seed Central Oklahoma (13-4-2) at 3 p.m. in Warrensburg Friday, Nov. 12. The other semifinal contest, which will also be at the South Recreation Complex Nov. 12, will feature No. 2 seed Emporia State (15-2-1) vs. No. 3 seed Northwest Missouri (13-5-1) at noon.
Kassie Newsom scored Central Missouri's other two goals in the contest, raising her team-high total to 17, while
Katelyn Poertner assisted on Newsom's first goal of the match for her first-career assist.
Jennies' goalkeeper
Sydney Daris improved to 3-0-0 on the season between the posts after making three saves in the 92-minute and 18-second match.
UCM took a 1-0 lead with under three minutes remaining in the first half in the 42nd-minute after Newsom drilled a pass from Poertner past Fort Hays State goalkeeper Deonna Wellbrock into the right side of the net.
The Jennies wasted no time doubling their lead, going up 2-0 just two minutes into the second half in the 47th-minute when Newsom used some crafty footwork and struck a shot into the back of the net for her second goal of the contest.
The Tigers (8-8-3) didn't go quietly, however, and scored off a wind-assisted goal from Jordan Thompson in the 85th-minute before knotting the match, 2-2, on a free-kick from Cailey Perkins that was deflected into the goal by Thompson in the 88th-minute, sending the match to a sudden-death overtime period.
The Jennies worked a corner kick just two minutes into the extra period. After
Caroline Cole took the corner for UCM, the ball fell into the box and took a deflection off a Fort Hays State player, which Martin corralled and promptly smashed into the right side of the net, sending Central Missouri to the MIAA tournament semifinals. It was Martin's sixth goal of the season.
The Jennies outshot the Tigers in the match, 20-7, including an 10-5 advantage in shots on goal and held Fort Hays State to no corner kicks while taking five of their own.
Tiger goalkeeper Deonna Wellbrock (8-8-3) took the loss in-goal after allowing three goals and making seven saves in 92-plus minutes.
