WARRENSBURG, Mo. (May 19, 2020) - With the NCAA and MIAA cancellation of spring sports, UCM Athletics is digging through the archives to find the best of what happened on each day of the spring. We'll relive some of the best highlights of UCM's storied history in the months of March, April, May and into June. Today's look back through UCM history is presented by Warrensburg Collision, the official collision center of UCM Athletics.
On This Day: May 19
Year: 2002
Sport: Mules Baseball
Central Missouri needed to win two games in the double elimination tournament over Minnesota State-Mankato to advance to the National Tournament. The Mavericks had beaten the Mules a day prior, 12-11. UCM's four-run ninth inning rally fell just short.
Game one was scoreless through three innings before the Mules pounced for four in the fourth. They added three more in the sixth and forced a decisive game with a 7-3 win.
UCM kept the momentum going in game two as they scored three in the top of the first. The Mules scored at least once in each of the first six innings and never trailed on their way to a 10-6 win and their third straight regional crown. Jason Deckelbaum hit a pair of home runs and was named the tournament MVP.
