MARSHALL, Mo. (Feb. 1, 2020) - Central Missouri Wrestling had seven competing in the Missouri Valley Open on Saturday. The Mules were lead by
Austin Morgan who totaled 16 points and earned a third-place finish in the 157 pound bracket.
After receiving a first-round bye, Morgan won his second-round match with a 19-1 technical fall over Lyon's Al Ordonez. In the 157 pound quarterfinal match, Morgan defeated Missouri Valley's Hunter Wagner in a 9-3 decision before falling to Kyle Lee of Williams Baptist in 3:18 in the semifinals. Morgan won his final two matches in the consolation bracket to earn the third-place finish. After going 4-1 in the open, the sophomore 157 pounder now posts a season record of 10-15.
Dakota Thevel went 3-2 on the day competing at 149 pounds. After suffering a first-round technical fall loss, Thevel won his next three matches with a 13-8 decision win and two fall victories. Thevel earned his fastest fall of the season in 1:32 over Carlos Cuevas of Lyon. Also competing at 149 pounds was
Emmett Kuntz. Kuntz went 3-2 with two major decision victories and a 11-5 decision win.
At 165 pounds,
Zion Vasquez picked up his second and third wins of the season after finishing 2-2 in the open. Vasquez earned two fall victories while also suffering two fall losses.
John Ridle also competed at 165 pounds in the open, finishing 2-2 with an 18-1 technical fall victory and a 10-5 decision win.
Joe Brady and
Jack Goin both competed in the 174 pound bracket. Brady went 0-2 on the day while Goin finished 2-2 with two falls. Goin earned the Mules quickest fall of the day at 52 seconds over Josh Tyler of Williams Baptist.
Mules Wrestling returns to action Wednesday, Feb. 5 to take on No. 2 McKendree. The Bearcats are 7-2 on the season with six of their wrestlers nationally ranked in the top-10. The dual is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. in Lebanon, Ill.
