Jennies Celebrate 50 Years With Win Over Washburn

WARRENSBURG, Mo. (Feb. 1, 2020) Central Missouri Jennies Basketball celebrated their 50th anniversary in style with an 83-68 win over Washburn. The win is the Jennies 14th straight as they move to 17-3 on the year and remain unbeaten in the MIAA at 10-0.

How it Happened
• Both teams shot better than 40% from the field. UCM was 30-69 for 43.5% and the Ichabods shot 45.8% going 27-59.
• Each team hit seven three-pointers. The Jennies outscored Washburn by nine though at the free throw line.
• UCM held a 44-29 advantage rebounding the ball. They grabbed 25 offensive rebounds and scored 28 second-chance points.
• Central Missouri blocked seven shots and came up with six steals on defense. 
• Plenty of offense in the first quarter. Nija Collier started her day with a three-point play to tie the game at three.  The team's were trading three-pointers with Washburn hitting three and the Jens two. Ellisha Davis put the Jennies up by three, 18-15, before the Ichabods rattled off six straight. Megan Skaggs made a layup in the final seconds of the period to tie the game at 21 after 10 minutes of action.
• Early in the second quarter a technical foul on the Washburn coach put Morgan Fleming at the free throw line. She sank a pair to put the Jennies up 25-23 and UCM never trailed again. On the possession after the technical, Gigi McAtee buried a three and the Jens were up 28-23. A Ryann Stearns triple made it a 37-30 game, but Washburn closed the half on a 7-4 run and the Jennies went into the locker room up four, 41-37.
• Down by six, 48-41, Washburn made a run to close to within one, 48-47. That's when the Jennies went on a 14-1 run themselves to pull away. Morgan Fleming with a three and then a transition three-point play put the Jens up 62-48 to cap the rally. Washburn hit a pair of three's in the final minute and the Jens led 64-54 after three.
• UCM still held a 10-point lead midway through the fourth when Gigi McAtee beat the shot clock with a long range three for a 76-63 lead with four minutes left to play.  Megan Skaggs added a three-point play in the final minutes and the Jennies went on to an 83-68 win.

It Was Over When...
• Gigi McAtee beat the shot clock with a long three with 4:10 remaining in the game putting the Jennies up 13, 76-63.

Jennies Stat Leaders
• Morgan Fleming led the Jennies with 19 points. She also came down with eight rebounds and four assists.
• Nija Collier picked up another double-double with 18 points and 14 rebounds. She also passed out four assists and blocked five shots.
• Megan Skaggs also scored 18 on 8-12 shooting. She matched Fleming with four boards.
• Morgan VanHyfte added 11 points with five rebounds and four steals.
• Gigi McAtee chipped in six points while Ellisha Davis and Ryann Stearns each scored five.

For the Ichabods
• Shelbie Piggie came off the bench to score 19 points on 7-12 shooting with three three-pointers.
• Alexis McAfee scored 12 with five rebounds and two steals.
• Hunter Bentley and Hayley Thompson each scored 10 points.

News and Notes
• The 68 points allowed are the most in a game this season by UCM.
• UCM won the rebounding battle for the 12 straight game and grabbed more then 40 for the 10th time in those 12 games.
• This is the fifth time this season UCM has reached 80 points in a game.
• Morgan VanHyfte surpassed 200 career points. 
• UCM has won six of their last seven games against Washburn. 
• The Jennies 29 three-point attempts were their most this season. They shot 17 in the first half.
• UCM welcomed back their alumni from the past 50 years as they celebrated 50 years as a program with a special on court ceremony at halftime.

• The Jennies will hit the road to take on Northwest Missouri next Thursday, Feb. 6 at 5:30 p.m. in Maryville, Mo.
