Jennies Fall to Hays in MIAA Championship Game

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (March 10, 2019) - Central Missouri Jennies Basketball played in their first MIAA Championship game since the 2014 season. The Jennies were down early and fought back, but couldn't overcome the top-seeded Fort Hays State in a 63-56 loss. 

How it Happened
• The Tigers led throughout the contest, scoring on their first eight possessions.
• Fort Hays shot 46% for the game while UCM was 21-49 for 43%.
• Both teams turned the ball over with UCM losing it 19 times and the Tigers 18. The Jennies scored 17 points off of the Tiger turnovers.
• Fort Hays outrebounded UCM 29-27 and scored 10 more points in the paint, 36-26.
• The Tigers hit seven more free throws than Central Missouri, 14-7, and won the game by seven points.
• Fort Hays couldn't miss to start. They hit their first eight shots and opened up an 18-5 lead in the first.
• The Jennies though started to come back, getting threes from Morgan Fleming and Paige Redmond.
• UCM cut the lead to two, 22-20, at the start of the second, but the Jennies struggled in the frame. They were just 3-12 in the quarter scoring six points.
• The Jennies defense kept them in the game as the Tigers scored just 10 points themselves and at the break, the Tigers had an eight point lead, 32-24.
• The Tigers scored the first six points coming out of the break and took their largest lead to that point, 38-24.
• Skaggs hit a three to cut the lead to 12 and after three the Tigers led by 11, 46-35.
• In the fourth, the Jennies got the lead under 10 following a Sydney Crockett three. Paige Redmond knocked in two free throws and it was 54-47 with 1:43 to go.
Morgan Fleming hit a three to cut the lead to six, 58-52, but the Tigers went 5-6 at the free throw line in the final 32 seconds to halt the comeback.

It Was Over When...
• The Jennies cut it down to seven on a couple of occasions. After a Tiger three-point miss, an offensive rebound and put back put the Tigers back up nine, 58-49 with 90 seconds left to play. They led by multiple possessions the rest of the way.

Jennies Stat Leaders
Paige Redmond finished a rebound shy of a double-double with 16 points and nine rebounds. She dished out three assists.
Megan Skaggs scored 14 on 5-7 shooting with three rebounds and three assists.
Morgan Fleming was in double-figures with 10 points and grabbed four rebounds.
Sydney Crockett added seven points and came away with three steals.
Peyton Taylor scored six off the bench with four rebounds.

For the Tigers
• Taylor Rolfs scored a game-high 17 points on 6-8 shooting with a pair of threes.
• Tatyana Legette picked up a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds.
• Lanie Page and Belle Barbieri each scored 10. 

News and Notes
Paige Redmond became the fifth Jennie to ever score more than 1,700 career points.
Sydney Crockett moved into a tie for sixth place all-time with 146 three-pointers.
• Following the game, Megan Skaggs and Paige Redmond were named to the All-Tournament team.
• Central Missouri moves to 42-28 all-time in the MIAA Tournament and 7-8 in championship games.
Peyton Taylor grabbed her 150th career rebound.

• Central Missouri will wait to see who their first opponent in the NCAA Central Region Championship is. Quarterfinal round games are Friday, March 16 at a location to be announced.
