ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (Feb. 16, 2019) - Central Missouri Jennies Basketball went on the road and picked up their eighth win the last nine games. UCM pulled away late for a 74-68 win over Missouri Western to put themselves at 18-5 this season, 11-4 in the MIAA.
How it Happened
• Central Missouri shot 51% from the floor making 29-51 attempts with seven three-pointers. They outshot the Griffons who hit on 46% both from the floor and from three.
• UCM won the rebounding battle 36-31 and scored more in the paint, 42-34.
• The Griffons were able to hang on to the ball, which kept them in the game, turning it over just seven times while UCM lost the handle 11 times.
• Missouri Western committed 17 fouls while UCM had just five. The Jennies were 9-15 at the free throw line and MWSU 2-3.
• It was a tightly contested start as neither team led by more than three-points during the first period. The Jennies were up 7-4, but back-to-back threes from Katrina Roenfeldt gave the Griffons a 10-7 lead.
•
Sydney Crockett tied the game at 14 with a three of her own, but Roenfeldt made the final basket of the quarter, a two with 1:12 left, and MWSU was on top, 16-14.
• In the second, Missouri Western grabbed their largest lead of the game, 26-21, when Brittany Atkins put in a jumper in transition.
• In the final five minutes of the half though, UCM outscored the Griffons 15-7 with
Morgan Fleming scoring five and
Peyton Taylor four points in the final two minutes.
• A three-point play to start the second half tied the game at 36 and the Griffons re-took the lead, 41-40, on another three from Roenfeldt less than two minutes into the half.
•
Morgan Fleming answered with a layup though to start a 9-0 UCM run as they pulled the lead to eight, 49-41, with 6:01 left in the third after a
Megan Skaggs layup.
• The Jennies led the rest of the way, but Missouri Western didn't make it easy. UCM actually extended their lead early in the fourth. Leading by four after three periods, Taylor and Fleming each hit three-pointers putting UCM on top by 12, 66-54. With 4:04 left Skaggs buried a three of her own and UCM appeared to be safe leading 71-59.
• But UCM went ice cold as the Griffons rattled off nine straight making it a one-possession game, 71-68, with 31 seconds left to play.
• Forced to foul,
Morgan Fleming put the lead back up to five at the free throw line to pad the lead and
Sydney Crockett brought us to our final score of 74-68.
It Was Over When...
• The Jennies saw their 12-point lead drop to just three with less than a minute remaining. Needing to stop the bleeding,
Morgan Fleming hit both free throws bringing UCM's lead back to five and allowing the Jens to both breathe a sigh of relief and hang on for the win.
