Wrestling Places Two at BVU Open

STORM LAKE, Iowa (Dec. 7, 2019) - Eight Mules competed in the Buena Vista Open this weekend. Among the eight, John Feeney and Dominique Hampton both earned fifth-place finishes with 11.0 points each. 

The 133 pound senior, Feeney, won his first two matches of the day. The first was a 9-0 major decision over Wartburg's Brennen Doebel, and his second a pin in 4:05 over Grayson Fries of Iowa Lakes CC. Feeny suffered his only loss of the open in the quarterfinals to South Dakota State's Daniel Kimball in a 13-5 major decision. The Omaha, Neb. native then went 2-0 in the consolation bracket with two decision victories. Feeny finished the open 4-1 to earn a sixth-place finish. Feeney leads the Mules through their first four competitions with a record of 9-5.

After receiving a first round bye, Hampton defeated Wartburg's Justin Henry in a 16-5 major decision. In the 184 pound quarterfinals, Hampton lost a 15-3 major decision to Tyree Overton of St. Cloud State. The UCM junior defeated Trevor Walton in a 2-1 decision in the consolation bracket to earn a sixth-place finish after going 2-1 in the open. Hampton is now 8-6 on the season. 

Competing at 141 pounds, Conner Dalton finished 3-2 at the open and recorded two technical fall victories. Emmett Kuntz also went 3-2 on the day while competing in the 149 pound bracket, while Dakota Thevel finished 2-2 in the same weight class. Also going 2-2 in the BVU Open was Jack Goin. The freshman 174 pounder lead the Mules with two falls. 

Central Missouri finished the open with two technical falls three major decision victories, four pins and six decision wins. 

The Mules return to action next weekend, Dec. 14-15, to compete in the Midwest Classic. The two-day tournament begins at 9 a.m. on Dec. 14th in Indianapolis, Indiana.
