Mules Pick Up First Win against Upper Iowa

WARRENSBURG, Mo. (Nov. 16, 2019) - Central Missouri Mules Basketball picked up their first win of the 2019-20 season with a 70-65 victory over Upper Iowa in the Fairfield Inn Classic. 

How it Happened: 
• Central Missouri controlled the lead against the Peacocks for a total of 37 minutes, only recorded a one-point deficit with seven minutes left to play in the second half. 
• Upper Iowa gained their first lead of the game at 53-52 with eight minutes left in the second half. The Mules and the Peacocks went bucket-for-bucket for two minutes of play until some made free throws by Daniel Farris and a pull-up jumper by Korey Gilbert regained the Mules lead at 60-55 with under six minutes to play. 
• The Mules shot 39.3% from the field and hit 11-21 from beyond the arc for 52.4%. Upper Iowa finished 25-55 from the field for 45.5% and hit 42.9% from the three-point range. 
• Central Missouri dominated the rebound game as the Mules finished with 19 offensive and 26 defensive rebounds to total 45 against the Peacocks 28.
• The Mules outscored the Peacocks in second chance points 20-4.
• Central Missouri turnovers allowed Upper Iowa to stay in the game. The peacocks scored 17 points off UCM Turnovers.

It Was Over When...
With under three minutes to play the Peacocks came within three points after a made three pointer Jackson Joens. With the 65-62 lead in the final two minutes, the Peacocks were forced to foul, sending both Farris and Gilbert to the line in the final minute. With the lead, the Mules continued to outscore the Peacocks 5-3 in the final minute.

Mules Stat Leaders:
Gaven Pinkley recorded the Mules first double-double of the season with 20 points and 17 boards. The 6-9 sophomore finished 8-16 in the paint, 1-2 from the three and 3-4 from the line to lead the Mules offense. 
Michael Winger finished with the team-high of four three's as he shot 80% from beyond the arc to total 12 points against the Peacocks. 
Daniel Farris lead the Mules with eight of their 13 total assists. 
• Gilbert went 3-7 from the field and 2-3 from the three-point range to total 11 points in just 16 minutes on the court. 
Matt Wilkinson hit 50% from the field and the three to finished with seven points. The senior forward also totaled seven rebounds. 
Kendale Hampton led the Mules with three steals.

For the Peacocks:
• Jareese William led UIU's offensive with 19 points against the Mules. Williams hit 6-10 from the field and 5-7 from the three to finish 64.7% on the night.
• Joens and the NSIC Player to watch, Joe Smoldt, each totaled 14 points.
• Leading the Peacocks defense with seven boards and two blocks was Dlyan Jones. 
• Jake Hilmer lead UIU with five assists. 

News and Notes:
• Central Missouri leads the all-time series against the Peacocks 2-0. 
• This was Pinkley's second consecutive game leading the Mules offense and the sophomore's second career double-double.

The Fairfield Inn Classic continues tomorrow in the UCM's Multipurpose Building. Upper Iowa and Central Oklahoma tip off at 2 p.m., followed by the Central Missouri and William Jewell at 4 p.m.
