Top-5 MIAA Showdown on Jennies Field this Weekend

WARRENSBURG, Mo. (Oct. 23, 2019) - Central Missouri Soccer hosts two top-five MIAA teams this upcoming weekend. The only team with five wins the in league, UCM, will tale on Washburn Friday night, then the Hornets of Emporia State on Sunday afternoon.

Opponents: 
Washburn Ichabods (7-5-1, 3-3-1 MIAA)
Emporia State Hornets (9-3-2, 4-1-2 MIAA)

South Rec Complex - Jennies Field - Warrensburg, Mo.

When:
vs. Washburn - Friday, Oct. 25 - 7 p.m.
vs. Emporia State - Sunday, Oct. 27 - 1 p.m. 

The Week Ahead:
• Central Missouri Soccer celebrates their 25th year as a program and UCM will be celebrating their history during their match this Friday with Washburn. As a part of the celebration, the Jennies have come up with a special 25-year team with 25 players from their first 25 years as a program. Team members will be announced at the game on Friday. 
• UCM will also honor their three seniors, Kelsey Mueller, Allysa Gann and Madi Sanders, in the moments prior to kick-off on Sunday against the Hornets. 
• The Jennies stay at No. 5 in this week's United Soccer Coaches Top-25 Poll.Emporia State and Central Oklahoma both dropped out of the top-25 last week, making UCM the only ranked MIAA team. 
• Washburn's Tera Lynch was named this week's MIAA Offensive Player of the Week. Lynch scored two goals, including the game-winning, and had one assist in a win against Central Oklahoma.
• Central Missouri went 1-0 in week seven, picking up another MIAA victory against the Lopers. The Jennies defeated Nebraska-Kearney 2-0 on Sunday afternoon. Last Friday's match against Fort Hays State was called off after about 20 minutes of play due to lightening in the area. The game has been postponed to a later date that has yet been decided.
• Central Missouri, Washburn and Emporia State are all currently top-five teams in the MIAA. The Jennies rank first while the Hornets are third and the Ichabods in fifth. 

Series History:
Washburn: UCM leads 25-5-1
The Jennies have won the last 13 consecutive matches against the Ichabods. The last time WU defeated UCM was a 1-0 Ichabod victory in 2009. Head Coach Lewis Theobald has only lost to WU twice in his time with the Jennnies.

Emporia State: UCM leads 24-4-2
The Jennies have won 18 of the last 20 matches against the Hornets. UCM and ESU met twice last season, resulting in a 3-1 Hornet, regular season, MIAA victory and a 7-1 Jennies victory in the MIAA Tournament.

Scouting the Competition:
The Ichabods
• The Ichabods finished the 2018 season with overall record of 7-10-2 and 3-6-2 in conference play. The program finished eighth in the MIAA standings and returned 20 lettermen including four seniors, five juniors and 11 sophomores. Washburn was picked ninth in the MIAA Preseason Poll
• Washburn finished 1-0-1 in week seven playing on their home field. The Ichabods tied Newman 2-2 in double overtime last Friday, and then defeated Central Oklahoma 3-2. Four different players scored WU's five goals last week, lead by Tera Lynch with two goals and an assists. 
• Senior Oliva Grasso and sophomore Josie Rimmer both lead WU's offense with four goals each. Lynch leads WU in assists with six, tying Kassie Newsom and Makayla Toth for 4th in the league. Lynch also leads the Icahbods attack with the team-high of 40 shots. 
• Ichabod keeper Reagan Wells have the fourth-best save percentage in the MIAA at .860. Wells also ranks third in the league with 6.62 saves per game.  
• Davy Phillips is in his third season as the Washburn Soccer head coach. In three seasons, Phillips has compiled a record of 17-19-3, mentored five All-American selections, seven all-region honorees, 22 Heart of America all-conference picks, two defensive players of the year and one freshman of the year leading Baker to a NAIA Sweet 16 appearance and a NAIA National Semifinal and two top 13 final national poll rankings. 

The Hornets
•The Hornets finished the 2018 season with the best record in program history at 14-6-1. They hosted their first ever post-season match and advanced to the MIAA Tournament semi-finals with a 2-1 win over Northeastern State. Emporia State capped the season with the Hornets first appearance in the NCAA Tournament in program history. Emporia was selected to fourth in the MIAA Preseason Poll.
• Emporia also went 1-0-1 last week against Newman and Central Oklahoma. The Hornet defeated UCO 1-0 and then tied the Jets 1-1 in double overtime. Both WU goals were scored by newcomer Mackenzie Dimarco. 
• Dimarco is ESU's star player this season. The forward has scored in every match but one and leads the Hornets and the MIAA with 14 goals. Dimarco also leads the league with 92 shots with over half falling on goal. Fellow Hannah Woolery leads the Hornets in assists with five. 
• Head Coach Bryan Sailer is in his ninth season with the Hornets. In eight seasons, Sailer has complied a record of 48-62-20 and posts a career record of 107-85-22.

Leading the Jennies:
Makayla Toth continues to lead the Jennies offense for the eighth-consecutive week. Toth leads the MIAA and ranks seventh in the DII with 32 points this season. Her 13 goals is second in the league while her six assists tie for fourth. Last week, Toth was named the MIAA Offensive Player of the Week and the DII National Player of the Week for the second time this season. 
Haley Freeman leads the league with eight assists and an assist per game average of .615.
Kassie Newsome leads the Jens attack with 43 shots on goal. Newsome joins Toth with six assists and tied for fourth in the league, while her six goals scored ranks sixth in the MIAA. 
Lindsey Johnson and the UCM defense have collected five shutouts this season, three of which were against MIAA competitors. Johnson has the sixth-highest save percentage in the league at .820.
• The Jennies have not lost a conference match since Oct. 21, 2018.
