PITTSBURG, Kan. (April 4, 2017) - Central Missouri got two runs in the sixth to tie Pittsburg State in game two of their doubleheader and send it into extra innings, but three straight singles won it for the Gorillas in the ninth. The loss, coupled with a loss in game one puts Central Missouri at 17-20 for the season and moves them to 7-5 in the MIAA.
Game One: Pittsburg State 8, Central Missouri 0 - 6 Innings
The Jennies led off the game getting the first two base runners aboard. Turns out that would be their best scoring opportunity of the game. Pittsburg State jumped on Jennies starter
Jordan Johnson early as six of the first seven batters reached base with three coming around to score.
Two innings later, Pitt State put up another three spot with a three-run home run, taking a 6-0 lead. They ended the game after six innings with their second home run of the game, a two-run homer to put the game away 8-0.
Johnson lasted just 2.2 innings giving up six runs.
Katie Giacone came on in relief to throw three innings, giving up two runs (zero earned) on two hits with three walks.
The Jens offense didn't get much going against PSU pitcher Emmie Robertson. Lauyn Deer collected two of UCM's four hits.
Alex Leonhart and
Makayla Schoonover had the others.
Robertson tossed all six innings allowing four hits while striking out six. Kristen Van Hoosen finished 1-for-2 with four RBI and a three-run home run. Kala Holder was 2-for-2 with a home run and three runs scored.
Game Two: Pittsburg State 3, Central Missouri 2 - 9 Innings
The Gorillas again trotted Robertson out to the circle and after UCM starter
Alexa Bradley allowed two first inning, runs, the two pitchers traded zeros.
Central Missouri left two runners on base in the fifth inning and finally broke through against Robertson one frame later. With two outs, a walk to
Lauren Mabe loaded the bases for
Courtni Smith who plated the Jennies first two runs of the afternoon with a single to right, scoring Deer and Leonhart.
The Jennies offense stalled after that though, and the Gorillas knocked three singles in the ninth off of Bradley to win it, 3-2.
Bradley pitched 8.1 innings for Central Missouri and struck out a career-high seven. She gave up 11 hits and three runs (two earned) in the longest outing of her career.
For the second straight game, UCM only picked up four hits. Smith had two with both RBI.
Robertson earned her second win of the day throwing nine innings giving up two runs one four hits with a walk and eight strikeouts. Lawren McKinney and Jenna Bolton each had three hits.
The Jennies play two more doubleheaders this weekend. They travel to Tahlequah, Okla. Friday, April 7 to take on Northeastern State. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
