WARRENSBURG, Mo. (April 18, 2017) --
John Fairchild hit two doubles, a home run and drove in six runs as the Mules picked up a 15-5 run-rule win over Southwest Baptist on Tuesday night at Crane Stadium/Tompkins Field. The Mules pounded out 15 hits in the win.
The Bearcats (27-12, 17-9 MIAA) jumped on top early, scoring three times in the top of the first to grab an early lead. Sean Murley had an RBI single and Andrew Meier doubled home two more for SBU. The Mules (26-12, 17-9 MIAA) plated five runs in the bottom of the second to grab the lead for good. Fairchild had a bases loaded double to clear the bases and tie the game at 3-3. He scored on
Travis Able's single to center to give the Mules the lead and Able scored on
Erik Webb's double.
The Mules plated three more runs in the third to make it an 8-3 game.
Justin Graff-Rowe had an RBI triple to plate the first run and scored on
Matt Elliott's RBI groundout.
Jackson Schnurbusch followed Elliott with a solo home run to left, his sixth of the season.
Collin Nevil had an RBI fielder's choice in the fourth and Graff-Rowe added a sacrifice fly to give the Mules a 10-3 lead. Nelson Muniz's RBI double in the top of the fifth stopped a string of 10 unanswered runs for the Mules and made it a 10-4 game, but Fairchild homered in the bottom half of the inning to push the lead to 11-4.
UCM scored four more times in the bottom of the sixth and led 15-4. Elliott added another RBI groundout, Fairchild added a two-run double down the line in left and he scored on Able's single to right.
The Bearcats scored one run in the top of the seventh on Meier's single to right, but
Charlie Skantze stranded two more SBU players on the bases and gave the Mules the run-rule victory, their second straight over SBU.
Stanton Lohrengel (3-0) picked up the win after allowing four runs on eight hits in 4.1 innings of work. He struck out three and walked three.
Luke Mercer allowed four hits over 1.2 innings of scoreless relief.
Fairchild finished the day 3-for-4 with three extra-base hits and six RBI. Able went 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored. Webb and Graff-Rowe also finished with three hits apiece.
Derek Galvin (0-4) took the loss for Southwest Baptist after giving up five runs on five hits in two innings.
The Mules return to action this weekend hosting Northeastern State. The series is slated to start on Friday night at 6 p.m. at Crane Stadium.
