WARRENSBURG, Mo. (April 14, 2017) - It was a tale of two games for the Jennies offense. The Jens got shutout in game number one against the Ichabods, but came back in game two to score 10 runs on 10 hits and earn the split in game two. The split moves UCM to 21-24 on the season and 11-9 in the MIAA.
Game Two: Central Missouri 10, Washburn 3
After failing to score in game one, the Jennies scored in five of the six innings they came to bat. Four Jens had two hits apiece as UCM knocked 10 hits and scored 10 runs.
Hailey Crabtree, moved to the number three hole in the order, paced the offense reaching base three times with a walk and two hits. She drove in four runs and scored twice.
Makayla Schoonover,
Lauren Mabe and
Courtni Smith each had two hits, Schoonover scored twice and stole a bag.
The two teams traded runs in the first few innings. Mabe got the scoring started with a double to score Crabtree, but the Ichabods evened things right back up in the top half of the second. Deja an inning later vu as this time it was
Jordan Johnson with an RBI double in the home half of the second, but the Ichabods again knotted the score to start the third.
Finally the Jens broke it open, scoring three in both the third and fourth innings. Schoonover played catalyst for Jens in the third. After it looked like she got hit on the hand, but was called back for a foul ball, she looped a single over the third baseman's head on the very next pitch to reach base. She scored the go-ahead run on Crabtree's double, then two runs scored on Smith's single and the Jens had the lead for good.
UCM tacked on scoring three runs in the fourth, and Crabtree's second double of the game scored two more in the fifth.
The Jennies defense backed starter
Katie Giacone, getting double-play lineouts to end the fifth and sixth innings. The first, Giacone escaped a bases-loaded jam, snagging a hard comebacker and turning two herself. The second,
Alex Leonhart doubled off a runner on first after a line drive to finish the sixth.
Giacone went the distance giving up three runs on five hits with six strikeouts and two walks. She also scored a run and stole a base on the offensive end.
Dakota Sanders lifted a home run to left center for the Ichabods in the first. She finished 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI. Washburn used three different pitchers, all three giving up runs. Kelsee Henry got the start and took the loss allowing five runs on six hits in 2.2 innings with two walks and two strikeouts.
Game One: Washburn 1, Central Missouri 0
The bats were cool to start the day. Both pitchers,
Alexa Bradley for the Jens and Lexi Crabtree for Washburn were on top of their game. It was Crabtree who got the better of the pitching duel though, a 1-0 game that took just an hour and 20 minutes to play.
Bradley's only blemish came in the fourth inning. With the bases loaded, she issued a four-pitch walk to drive home the only run of the game. It looked like the Ichabods were primed for more, but Bradley stuck out her glove and caught a frozen rope, then turned and fired to first for a double play, squashing the threat.
She pitched all seven innings giving up just the one run on five hits with two strikeouts and the one walk.
Crabtree was dominant early then needed to wiggle out of trouble. The Jens put some rallies together late, but couldn't bring in the tying run. Mabe led off the seventh inning with a ringing double to right center. The Jens loaded the bases after Leonhart walked and
Jordan Johnson poked a shallow single to left. Mabe was stranded at third as Crabtree ended the game with her fourth strikeout.
Crabtree got the win tossing seven shutout innings, allowing five hits with a walk and four strikeouts. Taylor Kemp scored the lone run and Lexie Myers was credited with the RBI walk.
The Jennies return to the diamond tomorrow afternoon for Military Appreciation Day. They host Emporia State for a doubleheader starting at noon.Â
