Mules drop first MIAA game of the season at Pittsburg State

PITTSBURG, Kan. (March 4, 2017) -- Central Missouri fell behind early and couldn't mount a comeback as they fell at Pittsburg State 13-6 in game two of a three-game series on Saturday afternoon.

The Gorillas (7-10, 1-4 MIAA) struck first with a two-run home run in the bottom of the first from Dallas Reed to grab the early lead. Logan Terrell had an RBI single in the second to make it 3-0.

The Mules (12-3, 4-1 MIAA) got on the board in the third on Travis Stroup's RBI single, but PSU got that run right back in the bottom of the inning to lead 4-1.

UCM pulled to within 4-3 in the fifth on Collin Nevil's two-run home run, but the Gorillas answered right back with two runs in the home half to lead 6-3. Blake Wilfong's sacrifice fly in the sixth made it 6-4, but Pitt State scored twice in the seventh and five runs in the eighth to break the game open.

UCM scored two runs in the ninth on a Stroup home run, but it wasn't enough as the Mules fell 13-6.

Taylor Burns (2-1) took the loss after allowing six runs on six hits in four innings of work. Ethan Vanderpool (1-2) earned the win for Pitt State after allowing three unearned runs on seven hits in five innings.

The series wraps up on Sunday with the rubber game at 1 p.m.
