ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - Central Missouri's pitching was on display on the first day of the Missouri Western "Hy-Vee" Regional Crossover. The Jens played two teams from the Northern Sun, defeating both, allowing just one run and nine hits over the two games. The wins gives the Jennies their third straight and put them at 9-14 on the season.
Game One: Central Missouri 9, Wayne State (Neb.) 1 – 6 Innings
Central Missouri broke a one-all tie with eight runs in the fifth and sixth innings of their 9-1 drubbing of Wayne State (Neb.). The top two in the order,
Lauryn Deer and
Makayla Schoonover, set the table for the afternoon with a combined four hits, four runs scored and five stolen bases.
Â
The Jens collected a two-out run in the first on a sacrifice fly from
Lauren Mabe to score Deer. Two innings, later the Wildcats answered with an unearned run, but that was all UCM starter
Alexa Bradley allowed on the afternoon. Bradley surrendered just one more hit after the third inning, picking up her fourth win of the season.
Â
Bradley finally received some much deserved run support in the fifth and sixth innings to the tune of eight runs. With two outs and the bases juiced in the fifth,
Hailey Crabtree broke the tie with a two-RBI single. Pinch-runner
Alexis Koop scored all the way from first as well after a Wildcat throwing error, giving UCM a 4-1 lead.
Â
After a perfect bottom of the fifth, the Jennies went to work again in the sixth. This time, they scored five runs, getting RBI's from
Allie Dishinger and
Carlie Rose and steals of home from Deer and Schoonover.
Â
Wayne State got two runners on in the sixth, but Bradley ended the game early, getting a groundout and the Jens walked away with a 9-1 win in six innings.
Â
The win is Bradley's second in a row, moving the freshman to 4-7 on the season. For the second straight game, she didn't allow an earned run, this time throwing all six innings, giving up the one unearned run on five hits with two walks and three strikeouts. She lowers her ERA to a team-leading 2.81.
Â
In addition to her two hits and runs, Schoonover stole a career-high three bases. Dishinger also recorded two hits and scored one and drove in a run. Crabtree reached base twice with a hit and a walk and drove in two runs.
Â
For the Wildcats, Nataliah Hopkins took the loss, giving up four runs on six hits in five innings. Riley Vanderveen was let down by her defense. She gave up all five runs in the sixth, but none earned. Alyssa Schropp picked up two hits, including a double and scored WSC's only run.
Game Two: Central Missouri 2, Upper Iowa 0
Game two was a whole different story from the first. This was a classic pitcher's dual with the Jens finally breaking through in the fifth.
Central Missouri rode the arm of
Katie Giacone who threw her first career complete game shutout. She allowed just four hits and no runs while striking out six and walking three. The win moves her to 3-4 on the season.Â
It took until the fifth inning today, but the Jens got on the board for Giacone. Dishinger drove in her second run of the day scoring
Alex Leonhart with a single. UCM threatened for more with runners on the corners and one out, but back-to-back groundouts ended the inning.
The Jennies tacked on some insurance in the seventh with consecutive two-out hits.
Carlie Rose kept the inning alive with a triple to right, and an infield single from Deer brought home the Jennies second run.
The Peacocks didn't go quietly in their final turn at-bat. Upper Iowa got the leadoff batter on and had the bases loaded with two outs, but Giacone squashed the threat, getting a groundball to preserve the shutout.Â
Deer finished the game with two hits, giving her four for the day. She now has a five-game hitting streak and seven-game on base streak and UCM is 6-3 since moving her to the leadoff spot in the order. Her and Dishinger picked up RBI's while Leonhart and Rose scored for the Jens who collected just six hits.Â
Erin Drahozal matched Giacone for four innings, but ended the game giving up two runs on six hits with one strikeout. The Peacocks picked up just four hits off of Giacone, none for extra bases.Â
Central Missouri plays two more Northern Sun teams tomorrow afternoon in St. Joe. They face Sioux Falls and Northern State. Game times are scheduled for noon and 4 p.m.
