BENTONVILLE, Ark. (Feb. 19, 2017) - Central Missouri Jennies Softball (6-11) went 1-1 on the final day of the Arkansas-Monticello Eight-State Classic, but a bit of personal history was made. Senior
Lauren Mabe joined the 200 hit club, becoming just the fifth Jennie to reach the milestone. She joins Beth Savage, Ashlea Bengtson, Braylyn Bivens, and most recently, Jakki Prater in 2015.
Game One: Central Missouri 2, Illinois-Springfield 1
Mabe got the Jennies scoring started in the first inning. Her 200th hit was an RBI double that scored
Hailey Crabtree. One batter later, Mabe came around to score the Jens second run on an RBI single from
Alex Leonhart.
That was all the run-support Jennies starter
Katie Giacone needed. She threw all seven innings for her first career complete game, giving up one run on just two hits with four walks and four strikeouts.
Things almost got away from UCM in the seventh as the Prairie Stars put the first two runners on base. UIS cut the lead in half on a sacrifice fly. With runners on second and third and one out, Giacone coaxed a ground ball to first and Mabe played hero on defense, gunning down the runner attempting to score the tying run from third. Giacone ended the game getting a ground ball to short to preserve the win.
Central Missouri totaled five hits, but none after the second inning. Crabtree reached base twice with a single and a walk and scored the Jennies first run.
The Prairie Stars mustered just two hits off of Giacone from Erin Stroup and Madi Torry. Stroup scored the lone run for UIS while Rachel Goff had a pinch hit RBI sacrifice fly.
Jaycee Craver threw all six innings for UIS. She allowed two runs on five hits with a walk and four strikeouts.
Game Two: Minnesota State-Mankato 2, Central Missouri 1
The Jennies second game was another 2-1 final, however this time they were on the short side. Both the Mavericks and Jennies got their first runs of the game on fielding errors, MSU in the second and UCM in the fourth, as Mabe scored on a two-out miscue to tie the game.
Both starters put up zeros until the Mavericks scored their second unearned run, this time the game-winner in the seventh. A one-out bunt single put a runner on base for Minnesota-Mankato. One batter later, she came all the way around to scored the game-winning run when UCM committed two throwing errors on the same play. Â
Both teams struggled to find offense, combining for just six total hits. Â Jennies starter
Alexa Bradley took the hard-luck loss tossing 6.1 innings giving up just two unearned runs on five hits with two walks.Â
Crabtree was the lone Jennie to get a hit off of Mavericks starter Libby Bemis. She also had one of the Jennies three stolen bases, the other two coming from
Courtni Smith.
Bemis got the win pitching seven innings for the Mavericks. She gave up an unearned run on one hit with three walks and three strikeouts.
Carly Esselman went 2-3 and Dana Morgan and Amber Kral each went 1-3 with a run scored.
Central Missouri is off next weekend, but returns to play back in Missouri March 4 against Truman State. The doubleheader is scheduled for 2 p.m. in Kirkland, Mo.
