HOUSTON, Texas (Feb. 18, 2017) -- Central Missouri rallied from three runs down in the seventh inning to force extras and
Erik Webb's double into the corner in the bottom of the 10th scored
Collin Nevil as the third-ranked Mules rallied for a 5-4 win over Tarleton State on Saturday afternoon at Minute Maid Park.
The game was scoreless through three frames before TSU (6-2) broke through for three runs in the fourth. A hit batter and a UCM (6-2) throwing error put two runners on with no outs. Austin Call's RBI single got the Texans on the board. Dylan Lemons' sac fly brought home the second run and Luis Rivas' RBI single made it 3-0.
The Mules were held in check until the sixth
Justin Graff-Rowe singled, went to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on
Travis Stroup's single to make it 3-1.
The Texans made it 4-1 in the top of the seventh on Ben Mauseth's RBI fielder's choice. UCM responded in the home half, taking advantage of four Tarleton State errors to tie the game at 4-4.
Matt Safranek led off the inning with a ball to the gap in right center, the outfielders collided allowing Safranek to go to third on a triple and he scored on an errant throw from the right fielder. Two errors by the right fielder on one play allowed
Travis Able to score to make it 4-3 and allow Graff-Rowe to go all the way to third. Stroup added an RBI squeeze bunt in the inning to tie the game. The Mules had runners at second and third with only one out when Nevil lifted a fly ball to left. A perfect throw from the left fielder cut down
Elijah Dilday at the plate and the game remained tied.
The game stayed tied until the bottom of the 10th. The first two batters were retired before Nevil singled with two outs. On a 3-1 count, Webb laced a double down the line in left field. The left fielder got to the ball, but bobbled it, allowing Nevil to score the game-winning run as the throw was off line.
Stroup finished the day with two RBI, while Graff-Rowe and Nevil had two hits apiece.
Taylor Burns (1-0) was spectacular in relief as he picked up his first win of the season. He allowed one run on three hits over six innings while striking out five. Starter
Jesse Steinbring allowed three runs, only one earned, on three hits in four innings.
Will Blanchard (0-1) took the loss for Tarleton State after allowing one run on two hits in two-thirds of an inning of relief.
With the win, the Mules improve to 6-2 on the season having won their third straight game. The Mules out-hit TSU 9-6 and took advantage of six Texan errors.
The Mules wrap up play in the Houston Winter Invitational on Sunday morning at 10 a.m. when they take on Chico State.
