JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (Jan. 18, 2017) - For the third straight game, Central Missouri Jennies held an opponent below 50 points, defeating Lincoln 66-41 Wednesday evening. The 41 points is the fewest the Jens have allowed this season, and the win puts UCM at 14-2 overall and 7-1 in the MIAA, in a tie for second place in the conference standings.
While the Jennies offense sputtered at times, it was the defense that held the Blue Tigers at bay. Central Missouri limited the Blue Tigers to 41 points on 16-for-59 shooting, a season low 27.1% from the floor. That's the lowest for an opponent against UCM since Rollins shot 24.7% on Nov. 16, 2013. Central Missouri has done a tremendous job limiting three-pointers. Their last two games, opponents have gone 3-for-31 from behind the arc.
This is the third game UCM has held an opponent below 50 points. The last time they achieved that was in December of 2006 when they held Pittsburg State to 49 points, Evangel to 34, and Barry University to 47. Over their last four games, 16 quarters, Central Missouri has held opponents to 10 points or fewer in seven of them, coming away with victories in all four games.
While Central Missouri led from end-to-end, the game remained close after three quarters. Lincoln ended the third on a 4-0 run, taking momentum with them down eight, 44-36, heading into the fourth.
As they've done all season long though, the Jens decisively pulled away in the fourth quarter, outscoring Lincoln 22-5. UCM went 9-for-12 from the field in the final frame, opening the quarter on an 11-0 run to put the game away.
Kelsey Williams scored seven of her 11 points in the quarter and gave the Jens a 20-point lead with layups on back-to-back possessions, including one three-point-play after a made free throw. The Jens have outscored their last two opponents 44-7 in the fourth quarter.
Williams was one of three Jennies in double figures on the night, but she did much more than that. The junior guard playing against her former team for the first time, also came down with four rebounds, dished out a game-high five assists and came away with three steals without turning the ball over once.
Ashley Duffy was the game's high scorer with 15 points, going 6-for-10 from the field. She also totaled a game-high tying eight rebounds.
Megan Skaggs scored 12 for the Jens and got UCM going, scoring the first five points of the game. She went 5-for-9 from the floor and 2-of-4 from three.
Kayonna Lee came within one point and two rebounds of her second straight double-double. She helped the Jennies dominate under the glass, out-rebounding the Blue Tigers 42-34 and outscoring Lincoln 38-24 in the paint.
Central Missouri finished the game shooting 47.3% from the field, doing most of their damage in the second and fourth quarters where they went a combined 17-for 26. They went 10-for-18 at the charity stripe after taking just two free throw attempts in the first half.
Erica Gibbons led the Blue Tigers scoring 13 points, going 5-for-6 at the FT line. She also came down with a team-best eight rebounds.
The Jennies have one more game this week when they travel to St. Charles, Mo. to take on Lindenwood Saturday, January 21. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. as UCM looks to win their fifth in a row.
