WARRENSBURG, Mo, (Sept. 23, 2016) - In their first match of the MIAA season, tenth-ranked Central Missouri took down defending MIAA regular season champions and seventh-ranked Central Oklahoma 3-0 (25-17, 25-16, 25-23). The win puts UCM at 1-0 in the conference and 11-2 overall and is their eighth straight win.
The Jennies held the Bronchos to a 0.061 hitting percentage, their third time this season keeping a team under .100. The Bronchos came in ranked fifth in the nation in attack percentage at .284. The Jens defensive effort was helped by
Katie Carlson's game-high 16 digs.
Kylie Hohlen added 12 more and
Mackenzie Harding put back six blocks.
Offensively, Hohlen completed her fourth double-double of the season sharing the game-high with 12 kills.
Cheyanne Lyons also had 12 kills and
Molly Lawrence cracked double-digits with 10.
Kourtney Thompson filled out the box score leading UCM with a 34 assists. She also finished with five kills, six digs and two blocks.
After UCO got out in front 1-0 in the opening set, the Jennies jumped right back taking a 9-3 lead and forcing a Broncho timeout. Central Oklahoma used the timeout to regroup, and used a 7-1 run to get to within one at 11-10. The Jens rattled off five straight points with two kills from Hohlen and three UCO attack errors to take a six point lead, and never trailed on their way to a 25-17 set one win. Hohlen and Lyons each had five kills in the frame.Â
Central Missouri never trailed in the second set cruising to a 25-16 win. UCM scored the first four points and led by as much as 12 at 22-10. Like the first set,
Molly Lawrence hit the magic number 25 with a kill.
A wild third set was unlike either of the first two and featured eight ties and six lead changes. The Bronchos took the upper hand early, getting out to an 8-4 lead. UCM didn't panic and eventually claimed their first lead since 1-0 at 14-13 on a Broncho attack error. The two teams battled back-and-forth and Central Missouri took their largest lead, 20-17, on a kill from Lyons. With a 6-3 run, Central Oklahoma came all the way back to tie at 23-all, but back-to-back attack errors ended the set and the evening for Central Oklahoma.
For the Bronchos, Ijeoma Njenje led the offense with eight kills. Taylor Bevis secured 12 digs and four kills and Katy Davis finished with 21 assists.
The Jennies look to make it nine in a row tomorrow night against Pittsburg State. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the UCM Multipurpose Building.
