PENSACOLA, Fla. (Sept. 2, 2016) - No. 9 Central Missouri Jennies Volleyball held on for a five-set victory over No. 23 West Florida Friday night at the Hampton Inn-Vitational. The Jennies took the first two sets, 25-20, 25-21 before the Argonauts tied the match winning sets three and four 25-20, 25-22. UCM built a big lead in the fifth and final set to grab the victory with a 15-8 set win. The win puts the Jennies at 3-0 this season.
Five Jennies landed 10+ kills in the match, led by
Maddie Jones' 15.
Cheyanne Lyons knocked 14 and
Molly Lawrence connected for a career-high 13.
Kylie Hohlen and
Kasey Hohlen landed 13 and 11, respectively.
Kourtney Thompson fascilitated the offense with 51 assists.
Kylie Hohlen recorded her second double-double of the day, digging out 23 West Florida attacks.
Katie Carlson had a career-best 25 digs to lead the Jennies and chipped in with eight assists, also a career-high.
Central Missouri collected over 100 digs for the match at 109.
Carly Offerdahl (19) and
Abby Skrastins (13) also totaled career-best dig numbers. Offensively, UCM hit .196 for the match with 74 total kills. Jones finished hitting .400 with 15 kills on 30 attempts.
The Jennies built up a big lead in the opening frame at 20-12. After a kill by
Kasey Hohlen got the Jennies to set point at 24-16, the Argonauts rattled off four straight points closing the gap to four, 24-20. Lyons ended the run with a kill, giving UCM a 1-0 lead in the match.
Both teams were going back-and-forth for much of the second set. After back-to-back kills by Lawrence and
Kylie Hohlen gave the Jennies a 20-19 lead, the Jens never trailed again, scoring five of the sets final seven points for a 2-0 lead.
With the third set tied a nine apiece, the Argonauts went on a 12-6 run to take a 21-15 lead and never looked back, getting back into the match with a 25-20 win. West Florida tied the match up in the fourth set with a 25-22 win. Similar to the third set, things were tied up at nine-all before the Argonauts went on a 12-5 run.
The Jennies came out hot in the fifth set, scoring five of the first six points and forcing a time out. The Argonauts used another time out when the Jens went up 11-5, getting five straight kills including three from
Kylie Hohlen. Lyons ended the match with her 14th kill.
For the Argonauts, Kathryn Torre finished with a game-high 19 kills and Tori Martella had a game-high 35 digs.
The Jennies finish up their trip to Pensacola tomorrow morning when they take on defending Division II Champions Wheeling Jesuit. Match time is scheduled for 11:30 a.m.
