WARRENSBURG, Mo. -- The Mules took sole possession of first place in the MIAA with a 3-2 win over Emporia State on Saturday afternoon at home.
Jake Alexander got the Mules on the board in the first inning when he singled to center field scoring Matt Elliot. Alexander added to the lead in the second inning when he hit a home run to right center, giving the Mules a 2-0 lead.
Emporia scored in the fourth inning, and again in the top half of the sixth inning to tie the game up at two.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Bennet Oliver delivered a home run on a full count to put the Mules back on top for good, 3-2.
The Mules bullpen allowed only two hits over the final three innings to close out the game.
Grant Gavin pitched the 9th inning and sat down the Hornet batters in order.
The win moves the Mules to 21-9 overall and 19-4 in the MIAA, while the Hornets fall to 26-8 overall and 18-5 in the MIAA.
