Jennies Softball Drops Two to Emporia State

EMPORIA, Kan. - Central Missouri Jennies Softball lost both ends of a doubleheader with Emporia State Saturday afternoon, 9-5 and 8-5. The two losses move the Jennies to 20-18 on the season and 9-7 in the MIAA.

Game One: Emporia State 9, Central Missouri 5

A big second inning for the Hornets put the Jennies in an early 5-1 hole. Central Missouri was able to get a run in the fourth and three in the fifth, but the Hornets added on with a two-run fourth and an insurance run in the sixth for the 9-5 final.

The Jens knocked 10 hits in the game, getting two apiece from Ali Jo Rogers, Emily King, Lauren Mabe and Katie Giacone. Giacone also delivered a triple and three RBI and Rogers swiped two bases.

Emily Robinson got the start for the Jennies and lasted only 2.1 innings. She took the loss allowing six runs on seven hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Allison  Tonyan finished the game for UCM, throwing 3.2 innings and allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits with five walks and a strikeout.

Morgan Swisher and Danielle Sprinkle each collected two hits and drove in three runs for Emporia State. Eryn Stockman started for the Hornets and got the win tossing 4.2 innings allowing five runs on nine hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Holly Hinkel notched the save pitching 2.1 innings of scoreless relief, allowing one hit and walking one.

Game Two: Emporia State 8, Central Missouri 5

Central Missouri again couldn't overcome a big inning from the Hornets early in the game. ESU scored five first-inning runs, getting run-scoring hits from Erica Harper and Jacie Stephens.

The Jens got two back on productive outs, an RBI ground out from Jordan Johnson and a sacrifice fly from Emily King, to cut the lead to 5-2.

Emporia State distanced themselves with a two-out three-run home run in the fourth.

Emily Robinson hit her second home run in as many days, launching a three-home homer of her own to center. The Hornets retired the side in order in the seventh, to hold on to the 8-5 win.

UCM scattered six hits, all from different spots in the order and of the six hits, five went for extra bases.

Jordan Johnson got the start in the circle and pitched all six innings allowing eight runs on nine hits with three walks and a strikeout.

Sprinkle totaled four RBI in the game for the Hornets with her three-run home run doing most of the damage. She also scored two runs. Hinkel started on the mound and tossed a complete game allowing five runs (four earned) on six hits with two strikeouts.

Central Missouri returns home next Tuesday, April 5 for their first of three doubleheaders next week. The Jennies take on the Gorillas for the midweek clash with first pitch coming at 3 p.m.
