Mules get walkoff win against Bearcats, 6-5 in 10 innings

WARRENSBURG, Mo. (March 25, 2016) -- For the second straight day Dylan Farrell provided the heroics, this time it was a walk-off single in the 10th inning to give the Mules a 6-5 win over Northwest Missouri on Friday afternoon at Crane Stadium.

The Mules (14-8, 12-3 MIAA) led 4-1 going to the ninth inning, but the Bearcats (13-12, 8-7 MIAA) scored three runs to force extra-innings. Northwest Missouri took a 5-4 lead in the top of the 10th on Nick Gotta's RBI single, but the Mules rallied for two runs of their own in the home half to get the win.

Derek Cornell was hit by a pitch leading off and went to second when Cole Distler reached on an error on a sac bunt attempt. Matt Safranek had an infield single to load the bases with no outs. Jackson Schnurbusch grounded out to third base to score Cornell and tie the game. After an intentional walk to Collin Nevil loaded the bases, Matt Elliott grounded in to a fielder's choice setting up the Mules with bases loaded and two outs. On the first pitch of the at-bat, Farrell lined a ba ll to center that just got over the outstretched glove of Garrett Fort to score Safranek and give UCM the win.

Lucas Williams (2-1) earned the win after tossing the 10th inning for the Mules. He allowed one run on two hits. Carson Smith (3-2) took the loss for NWMSU after allowing two runs on two hits in 1.2 innings of work.

The Bearcats jumped on top 1-0 in the top of the first inning. They loaded the bases with no outs and Jake Lewis drew a walk to force in a run, but Jesse Steinbring, making his first collegiate start, was able to keep Northwest to just one run.

The Mules tied the game in the fifth inning on Elliott's RBI infield single. UCM went in front 2-1 in the sixth on Safranek's RBI single to left field and two more runs in the seventh made it 4-1 in favor of UCM. Farrell had a sac fly in the seventh and Jake Alexander scored from third on a throw down to second after ball four.

The Bearcats got to Grant Gavin for three runs in the ninth to force extras. Aaron Barrett had a bases-loaded single to score one run, Fort grounded in to a fielder's choice to plate another and Lewis scored on a wild pitch to tie the game.

Elliott finished the day 3-for-6 with an RBI and run scored for the Mules. Farrell was 2-for-5 with two RBI and Safranek was 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored. Ross Juliana and Andy Muehlberger combined for three innings of one-hit relief for UCM.
