WARRENSBURG, Mo. (Dec. 19, 2016) - Central Missouri led end-to-end in their 70-59 victory over William Jewell. The Jens close the 2016 calendar year at 10-1 and winners of 10 straight games.
The 10-straight wins matches the longest under coach
Dave Slifer, which came in the 2013-14 season. Central Missouri hasn't won more than 10 consecutive games since the 1995-96 season, when they won 15 in a row.
Four Jennies earned double-digit point totals, led by
Paige Redmond's 17.
Kayonna Lee picked up her third double-double of the season with 12 points and 13 rebounds.
Morgan Fleming scored 13 while
Megan Skaggs chipped in 11.Â
Central Missouri shot 48.1% from the field, going 25-for-52. Lee was an efficient 5-for-6 while Redmond connected on four-of-seven three-pointers. The Jens won the battle on the boards, 35-28, and committed fewer turnovers for the 10th time in 11 games. It is the eighth straight game the UCM defense has allowed fewer than 60 points.Â
The Jennies opened the scoring with jumpers from Lee, Fleming and
Ashley Duffy, taking a 6-0 lead in the first three minutes. After back-to-back triples from the Cardinals tied the game at six, UCM scored 10 unanswered points, five from
Sydney Crockett and held the lead the rest of the way.Â
The lead stayed in double-figures for most of the second period, but a late flurry from WJC cut the lead to five, 32-27. On their final possession of the half, Redmond buried her second three-pointer of the period, giving UCM a 35-27 lead heading into the break.
As they've done all season, the Jennies pushed their lead in the second half. The Jennies outscored the Cardinals 18-13 in the third quarter. With 3:44 left to play, Duffy splashed a triple, bringing the lead to a game-high 19, 69-50.Â
A late rush from the Cardinals helped close the gap, but the final result was never in question, as UCM won by 11, 70-59.
William Jewell was led by a game-high 22 points from Maddie Nelson. She also grabbed seven rebounds to lead the Cards.Â
The Jennies return to action after the New Year on the road. They travel to Hays, Kan. to take on MIAA foe, Fort Hays State, Jan. 5, 2017.
