COLUMBIA, Mo. (11/1/2016) - Central Missouri Jennies Basketball opened their 2016-17 campaign with a 65-35 exhibition loss to Missouri, Tuesday night at Mizzou Arena.
The Jennies shot just 17% from the floor, but held their own on the boards, collecting 39 rebounds to match Missouri. The Jennies were also effective at the free throw line, connecting on 14-of-18 attempts. The Jennies defense also came away with 11 steals, three coming from
Sydney Skaggs.Â
Freshman
Megan Skaggs led UCM in scoring with nine points, going 3-for-7 from the field. Fellow freshman
Morgan Fleming and sophomore
Sydney Skaggs each had six points.
Sydney Crockett connected for a three-pointer and led the Jennies with six rebounds.
Sydney Skaggs and
Ashley Duffy each had five boards.Â
Central Missouri scored the first basket of the game as Fleming got the scoring started with a three-pointer. Missouri took their first lead, 4-3, on a basket from Amber Smith and never looked back. With four and a half minutes remaining in the first period, UCM trailed by four, 9-5, but the Tigers closed the frame outscoring the Jennies 7-0 to take a 16-5 lead after one.Â
Missouri pushed that lead to 18, 25-7 midway through the second period. The Jennies reached 10 points on a three from Crockett and another triple from
Kendra Gladbach ended the half with MU on top, 27-14.
The Tigers closed out the game with a 65-35 win. Central Missouri scored 12 points in the final period, their most in any frame.Â
Sophie Cunningham led all scorers with 21 points for Missouri. Lindsey Cunningham added 19 points and seven rebounds and Sierra michaelis chipped in 11. Lindsey Cunningham went 6-for-8 from the field helping the Tigers to a 42% field goal percentage. She also grabbed a game-high seven rebounds.Â
Next time the Jennies take the floor the games will count. The regular season begins in Warrensburg next Friday, Nov. 11 as UCM hosts Concordia-St. Paul. Tip off is scheduled for 1 p.m. from the UCM Multipurpose Building.
