WARRENSBURG, Mo. - For the second time in as many years, Central Missouri Jennies Basketball defeated a ranked Emporia State team at home. UCM built a large first-half lead and held on for a 69-64 win over the 11
th ranked Lady Hornets. The Jens move to 8-11 this season and even up their conference record at 7-7.
Ashley Jones led three Jennies scorers in double figures. She recorded her seventh double-double of the season with 17 points and 10 rebounds.
Shelby Winkelmann added 15 points and
Ashley Duffy chipped in with 14 points and seven rebounds.
The Jens held Emporia's offense to a 36.1 shooting percentage. They entered shooting over 44% from the floor. The Jennies were 22-of-56 from the field. Jones finished at 6-for-10.
Central Missouri also won the battle under the glass. They won the rebounding advantage 41-36 and outscored ESU 36-22 in points in the paint. The Jennies move to 7-1 this season when winning the rebounding edge.
The Jennies led for all but 48 second in the game. The Lady Hornets got on the board first with a jumper from Kelly Moten. After Winkelmann did her one better hitting a trey, the Jens didn't trail for the rest of the game.
UCM stormed out in the first period, jumping to a 13-2 lead and forcing an early ESU timeout. The Jens kept the pressure on and led by 11, 23-12, after the first frame.
An
Ashley Jones layup on the first possession of the second period put the Jennies up 13 points. The Jens maintained a double-digit lead for most of the period, but a three from Addie Lackey brought ESU to within nine, 32-23, on the final shot of the half.
The Jennies were able to stretch the lead to a game-high 14 points after
Tayler Weiks hit a three just over a minute into the second half. ESU started to mount their comeback though as Moten answered with a three of her own.
The Lady Hornets brought the Jennies lead back down to six when Kelsey Barnwell hit a three with just over two minutes to play in the period.
With less than 60 seconds to go in the third period, both teams hit a triple and the Jennies took a seven-point lead, 51-44, into the final period.
Less than two minutes into the fourth, Emporia State continued to play long ball, hitting back-to-back threes, and cutting the Jens lead down to just one, 51-50.
Central Missouri didn't panic, getting layups from Jones and
Paige Redmond on their next two possessions. UCM was able to get the lead back up to 11 with 3:35 to go, but Emporia had one last run in them.
In the span of 1:03, the Lady Hornets went on an 8-0 run to make it a one-possession game, 63-60. UCM was able to make their free throw shots, going 6-6 from the line in the final two minutes when ESU started to foul, and held on for a 69-64 win.
Moten led all scorers with 23 points. Kathryn Flott scored eight points and grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds. Lackey scored 13.
The Jennies will hit the road next week for two games. They travel to Hays, Kan. to take on Fort Hays State Thursday, Feb. 4 before heading to Kearney, Neb. to square off with Nebraska-Kearney Saturday, Feb. 6.
