Jennies Advance to MIAA Tournament Championship

Season Stats

OVERLAND PARK, Kan.
- Central Missouri staved off elimination in the MIAA tournament with a win in an elimination game Friday afternoon. UCM dropped their first game of the afternoon to No. 2 seed, Pittsburg State, 4-2, meaning they needed to defeat No. 4 seed Missouri Western.

The Jennies (42-14) did just that, scoring two runs in the opening frame and never trailing on their way to a 3-1 win.

The win sets up a rematch with Pittsburg State in the double-elimination tournament for the MIAA tournament championship tomorrow at 12 p.m. UCM will have to win two game to be crowned tournament champs, while PSU needs to take just one.

Game One: PSU 4, UCM 2

The Jennies gave starter Katie Shockley an early lead with a two-run home run in the first. That was all the scoring the Jens could muster though, as Emmie Robertson kept UCM off the board the rest of the way.

The Gorillas tied the game in the third with a two-run homer of their own and scored twice more in the sixth to take their first lead.

UCM had a chance to tie or take the lead in the sixth, getting the first two batters on. But Robertson escaped the jam and the Jens never threatened again.

Shockley picked up her first loss since March 20 against Augustana. She threw seven innings and allowed four runs on seven hits with four strikeouts and two walks.

The Jennies only sprinkled four hits on the game with Mabe's the biggest. Her home run gives her eight for the season.

Game Two: UCM 3, MWSU 1

Just like game one, the Jennies plated a pair of runs in the opening frame to take a 2-0 lead. An RBI ground out and an RBI single from Alex Leonhart gave the Jens the early edge.

Shockley was again in the circle for UCM and didn't allow a hit until the fourth inning. That was one of the few times the senior right hander was in trouble. The Griffons had already knocked three hits in the inning and scored a run, and had two runners in scoring position. After a pop-up for the second out, the Jens got a little help by way of the umpire. A ball in dirt from Shockley caused the runners to try to advance. But the ball hit the umpires leg and bounced right to Carlie Rose behind the plate, who ended the inning tagging out the runner at third in a run down.

UCM added an insurance run in the fifth on an RBI single from Rogers and Shockley did the rest, pitching to her 21st win of the season.

Shockley again pitched a complete game, allowing one run on just four hits with two strikeouts and a walk.

The Jennies collected eight hits, two apiece from Rogers and Rose. Rogers also stole two bases and drove in a run.
