WARRENSBURG, Mo. - Runs were at a premium in Central Missouri's first of four game set against Northwest Missouri. In the end, the Mules came up short, 2-1 and fell to .500 (6-6, 2-3 MIAA) on the season.
Both pitching staff's were on top of their games, allowing a combined three runs and 14 hits.
Tyler House went the first five for UCM, allowing just an unearned run while scattering five hits and striking out six. The bullpen followed with three scoreless innings, before NWMSU put the go ahead and eventual winning across in the top of the ninth.
The game remained scoreless after the first three innings of play. The Bearcats got on the board first, scoring an unearned run on two hits in top-half of the fourth.
The Bearcats kept the Mules off the board until the eighth inning. After
Miles Orscheln led off the frame getting hit by a pitch, the Mules got back-to-back one out singles from
Tony Sandifer and
Matt Milner, scoring Orscheln to tie the game.
In the ninth, NWMSU scored the go-ahead run without collecting a hit. The Bearcats put the go-ahead run in scoring position with consecutive one-out walks. They advanced on a groundout and the winning run scored on a passed ball.
Orscheln and Sandifer each finished with two hits, including a double for Sandifer. Orscheln had the team's only run and Milner the lone RBI.
Northwest starter Anthony Caenepeel went 6.1 innings allowing six hits and no runs. He struck out five and walked three, taking a no decision. Jacob Wagner was the winning pitcher for NWMSU throwing 1.2 innings allowing a run on two hits. Carson Smith earned his third save of the season.
Trevor Ezell suffered the loss allowing a run in his lone inning of work.
UCM and NWMSU continue their series with a doubleheader tomorrow starting at 1 p.m. at Crane Stadium.
