WARRENSBURG, Mo. -- Central Missouri finished fifth as a team with 28 points as the Mules played host to the MIAA Wrestling Championships on Sunday at the Multipurpose Building. Archie Williams claimed the individual championship at 174 pounds, while De'Quence Goodman took third at 285 pounds. Malacai Collins (125) and Josh Thomson (165) both finished fourth. Williams earns First Team All-MIAA honors, while Goodman earns Third Team.
Williams beat Colton Gallo (Central Oklahoma) for the second time this season, with a 15-4 major decision in the championship semifinals. In the finals, against No. 7 Josh Rodriguez (Fort Hays State), Williams gave up a late takedown but sent the match to overtime with an escape. He claimed first place with a takedown seconds into the extra period.
Goodman lost his first match of the day to No. 5 Jack Page (Fort Hays State), but did not lose again for the rest of the tournament. After a bye in the consolation quarterfinals, Goodman beat Ivan DeLeon (Nebraska-Kearney) with a 7-4 decision to advance to the third place match. Goodman had a pin at 4:09 against Kyle Factor (Central Oklahoma) to finish third in the MIAA.
Collins took his first match with a 3-2 decision over Dustin Reed (Newman). He then fell to top-seeded Marco Tamayo of Lindenwood in a 5-3 decision. In the consolation bracket, Collins beat Adam Ludwin (Fort Hays State) by 2-1 decision, for second win over Ludwin this year. In the consolation finals Collins was beat by Zach D'Amico (Central Oklahoma) to finish fourth.Â
Thomson also had a first round bye, followed by a match against No. 1 Chris Watson (Central Oklahoma). Thomson fell by 3-1 decision to Watson, but picked up a win against Zach Duwe (Newman) with a pin at 0:21. In the third place match, Thomson fell to Devin Aguirre by 11-5 decision.
Evan Young (157) faced off against No. 8 Chase White (Nebraska-Kearney) after a first round bye. Young kept the match close, but came up short, White earned the win with a 6-5 decision. Young then fell to Jeromy Davenport (Central Oklahoma) by 4-2 decision for his final match of the tournament.Â
Mike Boyd (184) fell in back-to-back matches, first to Jon McArdle (Lindenwood) then to Casey Powell (Nebraska-Kearney). Robert Schneider (197) also fell in two, first to No. 1 Romero Cotton (Nebraska-Kearney) and then to Michael Conner (Central Oklahoma).Â
Central Missouri will compete at the NCAA-II Super Regional on Feb. 28 in Mankato, Minn.
