MAGNOLIA, Ark. – The 22
nd-ranked Mules earned a doubleheader split with ninth-ranked Southern Arkansas on Friday afternoon at Walker Stadium. The Muleriders took game one 7-1, but the Mules responded with a 1-0 shutout win in the nightcap to earn the split.
The Muleriders (6-5) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning of game one. Billy Germaine had a two-run double to open the scoring and he later came across the plate on Chris Quinn's RBI triple to make it 3-0.
SAU extended the lead to 7-0 in the fifth when Germaine belted a grand slam to left field to break the game wide open.
The Mules (3-3) got on the board in the sixth when
Dusty Maas led off with a single, went to second on a sacrifice bunt and came around to score on a throwing error by the Muleriders. That run was all the Mules would get in game one.
Tyler House (1-1) took the loss for UCM after giving up six runs on four hits in 4.1 innings. Timothy Buchanan (1-1) earned the win for Southern Arkansas tossing eight innings, allowing one unearned run on five hits while striking out eight.
Game two was a pitcher's duel with the teams combining for a total of six hits. The Mules out-hit the Muleriders 4-2 in the game and earned the 1-0 win. The game was scoreless through eight innings of play before UCM broke through.
Matt Milner singled to lead off the ninth inning and was pinch ran for by
Victor Brancato, who promptly stole second base. Brancato then went to third on a passed ball and following a strikeout, came in to score the winning run on a single by
Colin Frederick. The single run was all the Mules would need.
Lucas Williams (2-0) earned the win for UCM tossing 4.1 innings of one-hit relief. He walked one and struck out six. Starter
Carlos D'Armas pitched 4.2 innings of one-hit ball. He walked five and struck out seven.
Preston Gray (2-1) took the loss for SAU giving up one unearned run on five hits in 8.1 innings pitched. He struck out 11 Mules and walked just two.
The Mules wrap up their road trip on Saturday at 2 p.m. with a single non-conference game against Lincoln.
