Jennies Basketball Drops MIAA Game to No. 1 Fort Hays State

WARRENSBURG, Mo. - Central Missouri Jennies basketball trailed early and couldn't catch up, falling to No. 1 Fort Hays State, 59-50 Thursday night. The loss puts the Jens at 2-7 this season and 1-3 in the MIAA while FHSU remains undefeated at 10-0 and 0-3 in conference games.

Four different Jennies all reached 10 points even. Ashley Jones, Shelby Winkelmann, Danielle Randle and Ashley Duffy all reached double figures. Randle also pulled down a career-high 10 rebounds for her first career double-double and blocked a pair of shots. Duffy and Paige Redmond each dished out three assists to lead the Jens.

UCM came out strong, scoring on three of their first five possessions. Sydney Crockett scored a couple of field goals, including a three pointer and Winkelmann added another as the Jens went up 7-6. From there, the Tigers outscored Central Missouri 15-6 the rest of the period, taking a 21-13 lead after 10 minutes of play.

The Tigers added to their lead before halftime, outscoring UCM 14-8, and taking a 35-21 lead into intermission. Redmond hit her only field goal of the game with one second remaining in the half.

Trailing by as many as 21 last in the third period, UCM got a shot in the arm from Duffy to cut the lead to single digits. With under three minutes remaining, Duffy scored eight of UCM's 12 points at the end of the period, giving UCM some life at 46-37 heading into the final frame.

However, that is as close as the Jennies would come, as the Tigers scored the first seven points of the fourth period and was able to hold off any rally from UCM, on their way to a 59-50 win.

Fort Hays was led in scoring by Paige Lunsford and Chelsea Mason who each scored 11. Elle Stein added 10 points and grabbed eight rebounds.

UCM outshot the Tigers, 34% to 31.5%, but were outrebounded by nine and committed four more turnovers than FHSU.

The Jennies conclude the 2015 calendar year Saturday, Dec. 19 as they host Nebraska-Kearney at 1:30 at the Multi with the Mules and Lopers to follow shortly after.
