WARRENSBURG, Mo. -- The Jennies Soccer team defeated Minot State 2-0 on Sunday afternoon to advance to the Sweet Sixteen.
The Jens had a good opportunity to take an early lead over Minot State in the third minute when
Julie Ireland beat the defenders and faced the goalkeeper one-on-one, however her shot was low and the goalkeeper was able to come out of the box and make the save to keep the game scoreless. Minot State recorded their first shot of the game just seconds later, but a save from UCM goalkeeper
Ana Dilkes kept the game scoreless.
The Jennies had another good scoring opportunity in the 70th minute when a shot from
Abby Rhodes barely missed finding the back of the neck and instead hit the post.
The Jens finally got on the board in the 85th minute when
Taylor Thompson scored on a penalty kick to give the Jennies a 1-0 lead. The goal was her third of the season.
Central Missouri scored an insurance goal in the 87th minute when
Jada Scott took the ball down the field and scored into the top of the goal to put the Jennies up 2-0.
Dilkes recorded five saves in the shutout.
The victory improves the Jennies record to 20-2-0, and the loss drops Minot State to 16-5-1.
The Jennies will play Minnesota State-Mankato on Friday, with the winner of that game playing either Grand Valley State or Bellermine in the Elite Eight.
