Season StatsST. JOSEPH, Mo. - No. 13 Central Missouri earned their sixth straight win Thursday night with a 3-0 sweep (26-24, 25-23, 29-27) of Missouri Western. All three sets were decided by two points with two sets needing extra points. The Jennies move to 26-4 this season and 14-3 in the MIAA.
Carly Sojka picked up a double-double with 15 kills and 19 digs.
Maddie Jones (12) and
Cheyanne Lyons (11) also finished with double-figure kills.
Kourtney Thompson helped the offense with 42 assists and
Annie Reilly finished with 27 digs.
Neither team led by more than three points in a tightly contested opening set. UCM built an early 8-5 lead, but the Griffons came back with an 8-3 run to go up two, 13-11. The two teams traded points and the match remained tied at 19-all. The Jennies got to within set point, 24-21, but MWSU again was able to come back and tie. Needing extra points, the Jens got a kill from Jones and a Griffon attack error, to give the Jennies the early 1-0 lead in the match. Jones had seven kills in the set while Thompson had 15 assists and Reilly had nine digs.
The Jennies survived a late Griffon run in the second set to take a 2-0 lead. After going up by as many as six, 13-7, thanks to three straight kills from Sojka, the Griffons began to chip away at the Jennies lead. MWSU took their first lead of the set since 3-2, going up 19-18. The Griffons kept the lead until 23-22 when the Jennies scored three straight, getting a kill from Sojka and Jones, to close the set. Sojka landed five kills in the set while Reilly picked up 10 digs.
Like the first set, the third also needed to go to extra points. After Western took an 18-15 lead, the Jennies quickly retied the set with three straight points following a time out. The Griffons went back ahead and were at set point 24-23. But a kill from Sojka and a Griffon attack error gave the Jennies their first lead since 14-13, 25-24. UCM was able to gain the advantage on points 25, 26, and 27, but could't close out the match. UCM finally got back-to-back points on kills from Lyons and Sojka to clinch the match.
Central Missouri has one final match in the regular season. They host Northwest Missouri Saturday, Nov. 14 at 7 p.m. The Jennies will honor their five seniors with a special post-game ceremony.
