WARRENSBURG, Mo. - No. 11 Central Missouri Jennies Volleyball fell into a 2-0 hole in their match against Missouri Western, and despite coming all the way to tie even things up, UCM couldn't overcome the early deficit, dropping the match in five, 3-2 (22-25, 19-25, 25-14, 25-23, 8-15). The Jennies record now stands at 16-3 on the season and 4-2 in the MIAA.
Carly Sojka was the Jennies offensive leader connecting on 20 kills. She was one of three Jennies with double-digit kills.
Maddie Jones amassed 15 and
Lauren Dudgeon set a new career-high with 12. Sojka also dug out 15 Missouri Western attacks for her ninth double-double. Setter
Kourtney Thompson also recorded a double-double with 52 assists and 13 digs.
Annie Reilly led the Jens defense with 33 digs whi and
Shelby Winkelmann chipped in with 14.
The Jennies grabbed an early lead in the first set, getting ahead by five, 11-6. The Griffons came back with a 9-1 run, eventually going up three, 15-12 and never losing the lead. UCM cut the lead to one, 21-20, but MWSU scored the next three and ended the set on a kill from Lindsey Partridge.
Set No. 2 was also tight early with the score knotted at 8-apiece. The Griffons gradually increased their lead to a set high six, winning by as many 25-19.
UCM came out firing in the third set, determined to get back into the match. They scored the first four points and opened up a double-digit lead on their way to a 25-14 win getting kills from Sojka and
Kasey Hohlen to finish the set.
Set No. 4 was a back-and-forth affair with the Griffons maintaining a slight lead. Down by four, 15-11, the Jennies made their move, finally grabbing their first lead of the set, 22-21 on Sojka's third kill of the set. The Jens got to set point, 24-21, but MWSU made things interesting, getting to within one, 24-23. UCM ended the set and evened up the match on a kill from Jones.
After losing two straight sets it was the Griffons who came out in set five and jumped to a 4-0 lead. They pushed their lead to five, 9-5 and went on to win the set and the match 15-8.
The Jens are right back at it tomorrow evening as they travel to Maryville, Mo. for a match with Northwest Missouri. First set is scheduled for 6 p.m.
