WARRENSBURG, Mo. -- The Mules improved their early season record to 4-0 with a 91-68 win over Westminster on Saturday afternoon at the UCM Multipurpose Building. UCM pulled away late in the first half and cruised to the 23-point victory.
The Blue Jays (0-3) led early on at 9-5, but the Mules (4-0) used an 8-0 run to grab a 13-9 lead. Westminster battled back, however, from five down to regain the lead at 25-24 with 7:39 to play in the first half. A three-pointer from
Brad Woodson put UCM back in frton 27-25 and he followed it up with a layup to put the Mules in front by four. A jumper from
Preston Brunz and another three from Woodson made it a 10-0 run and a 34-25 UCM lead with 3:34 to play in the half.
Westminster cut the lead to six on a Tanner Cochran three, but Woodson drained two more triples followed by a Brunz layup and a
TJ White free throw and UCM led 43-28 at halftime.
The Mules poured it on in the second half as they used a 12-4 run out the break to lead by 23 at 55-32 with 15:23 to play in the game.The lead grew to 30, 85-55, at the 4:37 mark of the second half as the Mules coasted to their fourth straight win to open the season.
UCM shot 61 percent from the floor, 33-of-54, and 63 percent from beyond the arc, 12-of-19. The Mules were 13-of-20 at the foul line for 65 percent.
Woodson led all scorers with a career-high 20 points on 6-of-6 shooting. White and
Tony Cochran both had 12 points and
Brennen Hughes chipped in 10 with a game-high five rebounds.
The Mules out-rebounded Westminster 28-24 and held a 36-16 lead in points in the paint. UCM had 18 assists to 12 turnovers and forced 18 Blue Jay giveaways.
Brandon Moore led WC with 18 points on 7-of-9 shooting and Matt Murphy chipped in 13. The Blue Jays shot 48 percent from the field, 25-of-52, and 52 percent from three-point range, 9-of-17. They were 9-of-12 at the charity stripe for 75 percent.
The Mules are back in action on Tuesday afternoon when they travel to Kansas City to play Quincy at the Sprint Center. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. and the game can be heard live on 1450 KOKO, 98.5 The Bar and warrensburgradio.com. UCM Athletics will host a pregame tailgate at Johnny's Tavern in the Power & Light District from 12 to 1:30 p.m. Admission to the pregame event and the game itself is free of charge.
