WARRENSBURG, Mo. – The No. 12 Central Missouri Mules wrestling squad hosted the UCM Open on Sunday afternoon. No. 1
Frank Cagnina took second at 149 pounds, and had the Mules only place finish at the tournament.
Cagnina pinned Nicholas Greco (Maryville) in his first bout of the day at 4:32, followed by an 18-4 major decision win over Tyler Mies of Newman. Cagnina then had back-to-back technical falls in his third and fourth matches against Danny Conley (Labette) and Isaac Rentas (Ellsworth Community College). He faced No. 3 Keenan Hagerty (Maryville) in the finals, where his 34-match win streak was snapped with a three-point nearfall in the last seconds of the third period.
Archie Williams had the fastest pin on the squad in his first match at 0:47, beating Andrew Bennett (Lindenwood-Belleville). He then lost his second match with a 15-6 major decision by Curt Maas (University of Northern Iowa). Williams won his next three matches by decision, and then lost by decision to Luis Alba (McKendree) in the consolation quarterfinals.
Josh Thomson and
Nicholas Lovejoy went 2-2 on the day. Thomson started the tournament with a win by fall over Alex Destra (Missouri Valley College), and then had a 3-2 decision win against Taylor Berger (University of Northern Iowa). Daniel Lewis (Missouri) then pinned him at 1:36, Lewis went on to have the most pins in the shortest time at the tournament with four pins in 5:05. Thomson lost to Ricky McCarty (Oklahoma City University) by 6-2 decision in his last match of the tournament.
After losing by 8-2 decision in his first match against Matt Hurford (Ellsworth Community College), Lovejoy had back-to-back pins at 1:18 and 2:17, beating Ryan MacGeorge (Lindenwood- Belleville) and Christian Dulaney (University of Northern Iowa). In his last match Ryan Beltz (Maryville) beat Lovejoy by 8-3 decision.
The Mules will compete again Saturday at the Nebraska-Kearney Open. The tournament will start at 9 a.m. in Kearney, Neb.
