Last Week: January 20-26, 2014
Last week the Mules fell in back-to-back duals against Lindenwood (3-1, 2-1 MIAA) and Ouachita Baptist (9-5, 1-3 GSC). Wednesday's dual against Lindenwood was the last home dual and the second MIAA match up of the season. The Mules started strong,
Zeb Spicer (157) wrestled at 174 for the first time this season and was able to pin Tyler Sexton at 3:55, giving the Mules a 6-0 lead. The team dropped the following five matches, giving Lindenwood a 22-6 lead.
Eric Mateo and
Frank Cagnina won the next team points for the Mules, Mateo with a 11-9 decision over Kyle Webb and Cagnina with a 19-6 major decision over Colton Orlando.
Ty Loethen won the match of the dual with a 7-0 decision over Luke Roth, but the Mules still fell at 26-16 to the Lions.
Saturday, the Mules traveled to Arkadelphia, Ark. to face off against Ouachita Baptist.  The dual had a rough start for the Mules, with the team dropping the first three matches to give Ouachita a 12-0 lead. Mateo cut the lead in half when he pinned  Seth Hutchins at 1:44, and Cagnina added three with a 7-2 decision over Zach Mathews. The Mules finally caught Ouachita at 18-18, after Loethen pinned Joey Hutchinson at 2:21. followed by
Josh Thomson's 13-6 decision over Joey Houchins. Josh Ploof dropped his match against Dallas Smith by major decision, to give Ouachita a 22-18 lead going into the final match of the dual.
Todd Brier won the final match by decision over O'Dell Lee, but did not earn enough team points to tie the score. The Mules lost by one at 22-12.
2013-2014 Season LeadersÂ
Cagnina currently boasts a 25-2 overall record, and is one of three Mules to remain undefeated in duals, and is the only Mule to be ranked in every Division II Coaches Poll this season. He started the season at No. 8 and has worked his way up to No. 3. Cagnina has the most wins by major decision (11) on the Mules squad, and is first on the UCM All-Time Leaders list for most major decision wins in a single season. He is tied for first in wins by tech fall (2). Cagnina is second in most team points earned this season (34). Cagnina has a 5-2 record against ranked opponents this season. His only two losses of the season coming from Central Oklahoma's Jordan Basks, who is currently ranked No. 1 in the nation.Â
Eric Mateo was the only member of the 2012-2013 Mules squad to qualify for nationals last season. He is tied for third most wins on the team, with a 20-5 record this season, and is undefeated in duals. Mateo has earned the most team points this season (36)  and  has the most wins by fall on the team (9). He also has the second fastest fall on the team (0:46). Â
Ty Loethen is the only other member of the Mules squad to be nationally ranked this season. In the most recent Division II Coached Poll, he was ranked No. 7. Loethen has a 11-4 record, and is undefeated in duals this season. Loethen currently has the fastest fall of the season (0:25), that win was against Newman's Juan Ortiz.Loethen is third in team points earned this season (26).
Josh Thomson is tied for third most wins on the team, with an 20-9, and is 5-2 in duals. He is tied for most wins by decision (11).
Todd Brier has an 18-11, with a 5-2 dual record. He is second on the team in wins by fall (8), and has the third fastest fall on the team (0:49). Â
