This Week
Central Missouri will host the home opening Peggy Martin Challenge this weekend, in Warrensburg, Mo., presented by the Comfort Inn. The only two teams the Jennies have played against before this weekend are Ferris State and Minnesota State Moorehead, Central Missouri leads both series. All of the teams Central Missouri will face in the Peggy Martin Classic are non-conference. Ferris State will be the Jennies only ranked opponent, after week one of the 2013 season Ferris State was ranked 23, but was not ranked in the AVCA preseason poll.
Last Time Out
The Jennies spent last weekend in San Antonio, Texas competing in the Hilltopper-Rattler Classic, hosted by St. Mary's University and St. Edwards University. Central Missouri faced four non-conference teams, that they had not faced off against in over a decade. Central swept all four of their opponents, including 23rd-ranked Adams State, the only ranked opponent they faced.
Awards
Central Missouri senior setter
Julia Bates was named MIAA Specialist of the Week, for the first week of the 2012-2013 season. Bates averaged 12.08 assists per set to go along with 2.17 digs per set. She had 145 assists on the weekend to move into seventh all-time at UCM with 4,145 assists. She also had 16 kills and seven service aces on the weekend. In the win over Minnesota-Crookston she had 42 assists, nine digs, two service aces and two kills. In the win over Adams State she had 28 assists, five kills, three digs and two aces as the Jens swept all four matches on the weekend.
Bates was the MVP of the Hilltopper-Rattler Classic All-Tournament Team. In addition to Bates,
Annie Reilly,
Carly Sojka, and
Haley Thompson were also named to the All-Tournament Team.
Jennies in the Polls
Central Missouri moves up to No. 7 in this weeks AVCA Division II Coaches Poll. The Jennies debuted in the first AVCA Division II Coaches' Poll of the year earlier this month at No. 8.
The Jennies are the third-highest MIAA squad in the poll, behind #3 Nebraska-Kearney. #6 Washburn, however no other MIAA teams were ranked. Last season, the Jens were ranked #5 in the nation in the preseason poll, before going 3-1 at the season-opening Hemmingway's Island Grill Invitational in Pensacola, Fla.
The Jennies are the only team in Division II to appear in the AVCA Coaches Poll every week since the poll began in 1986, making the top 25 for 343 consecutive weeks.
Concordia-St. Paul dropped from No. 1 to No. 4 in this week's poll, Tampa claiming the top spot, moving up one spot from No. 2 in the preseason poll. Wayne State jumps up to No. 8. after being ranked No. 20 in the preseaon poll. Ferris State, who was not ranked preseason, claimed the 23rd spot but was not ranked preseason.
