Jennies use late run to upset #22 Emporia State, 63-62
Box Score (WARRENSBURG, Mo.) – Senior forward Nicole Caddell scored a team-high 18 points, as the Central Missouri Jennies outlasted the #22 Emporia State Lady Hornets, 63-62. The Jennies outscored Emporia State 6-2 over the last 1:47 to edge out the Hornets for the win. The victory snaps a four-game losing streak at the hands of Emporia State.
The Jennies controlled much of the first half, earning their biggest lead of the game with Shaquanda Wiggins' layup at the 4:12 mark of the first half, going up 28-13. The score capped a 7-0 run for the Jennies, who maintained a double-digit advantage until the last two minutes of the half, as the Lady Hornets scored the last eight points before halftime.
Emporia State continued to chip away at the UCM lead at the start of the second half, eventually using an 8-2 run to tie the game at 42-42 with 11:14 to play. For the next seven minutes, the two sides traded the lead back and forth, when six straight from the Hornets put them in front, 57-53 with just 3:14 to play.
Another layup from Wiggins and a pair of free throws from Alyssa Rhodes tied the game at 57, before ESU's Heather Robben hit the layup while drawing a foul, putting the Hornets back on top by three after finishing the free throw. Caddell and Wiggins teamed up for a pair of field goals that gave the Jens a 62-60, and another free throw from Wiggins gave the Jennies just enough to pull out the victory, 63-62.
In her best offensive performance since re-joining the team last week, Wiggins finished with 17 points and five rebounds, going 8-of-9 from the field. Rhodes also reached double-figures, scoring 10 points, eight of which came in the second half.
The victory is the second over a ranked team for the Jennies this season. In November, UCM won at home over Quincy, who were ranked No. 24 at the time.
Central Missouri now faces five straight road games as they hit the home stretch of the MIAA schedule. The Jennies first travel to Jefferson City to take on Lincoln this Saturday, at 1:30 p.m.
